Megson didn't replace the sports psychology and performance teams. A lot of the medical stuff was still here then. And the recovery equipment still in use.Bruce Rioja wrote:Wasn't it that BSA took his retinue of quacks with him, and that Megson was simply too thick/ignorant/old fashioned to understand any of their values?malcd1 wrote:And I thought it was Megson.Hoboh wrote:I thought Coyle could do no wrong............................................or was it FreedmanBWFC_Insane wrote:I believe Coyle dismantled most of the medical team we had to employ all his mates......
Ask Jussi about Coyle's staff changes if you want a good example of good staff being pushed out for personal mates....

oooh - can we have a new forum thread where we ask Jussi questions and he answers?

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: If carlsberg did transfer threads.....This would be it!
That's a good point about continuity and I agree with it. I don't think it's much of an issue for bigger clubs because they can afford to bring in players who suit the new system but it's been an issue for us because one manager signs players to suit his system and then the next has a bunch of players who he needs to change because they don't suit his. I think that's one of the reasons a club like Swansea or Southampton have had the success they have because throughout managerial changes, they don't deviate from what the club wants to do; Swansea want to pass the ball and Southampton have a high pressing style so the personnel may change but the principles stay the same, which is easier to be successful with. We've lost that and now we don't have a squad which has any real identity left, they're just players we couldn't get rid of and ones we could afford to bring in.StaffsTrotter wrote:If there is one issue levelled at PG wrt managerial appointments it might be about continuity. There has been an alternating pattern of football style associated with each manager, (albeit it could be argued each fitted the circumstance of the time). Obviously we had the rep of the Allardyce style of football. Little Sam was shift to more expansive. Megson back to the more grind it out and Coyle back to the expansive, then back to the grind with Freedman.bobo the clown wrote:The first and biggest error was promising Sammy Lee that if Allardyce went he'd be given a shot. It was a reasonable enough idea on paper, given his coaching pedigree, just clearly not in fact. Why we were then left looking at the Megson/Sounds level of manager is a mystery given how we'd done in the previous 4 or 5 seasons.
The Lee damage was repairable ... the Megson appointment was strange, though the welcome he got from a section of the support was a disgrace.
Coyle seemed a breath of fresh air ... and it was for the first period. I honestly don't think he ever got over the Stoke semi-final. Injuries ravaged us ... to an extent that boggles the mind ... and then Freedman. Fckg hell, Freedman. I still want to weep. What an astonishingly poor choice that was and I DO claim to have called that from the very outset.
Been happy to support all of them (or at least not be hostile) on the basis I am the outside looking in and we only get small insights into the job they do and the circumstances they do it. Each of them at various times and in different proportions, made you proud & optimistic and at other times wonder why you bother.
I will say that 2 of those guys I had early doubts - Little Sam - after the shambles of defeat and interview on MOTd in oversize suit and dear old Duggie, who I was initially bemused but along with SmokinF I began to have reservations a few months into his tenure and whose exploits led me to not renew last years ST for the first time in 20 odd years - 1/2 ST bought when he was dispatched.
I still can't be overly hostile with Coyle. I'm with Bobo, other than I thought the turning point was Holden injury - from there it just seemed like a continuous stream of bad luck. Did he make some mistakes - yes, was he tactically naive on occasion - yes, but fate did seem to be against us.
Agreed about Coyle too. He may not be a great manager but I don't think we'd have been relegated if it wasn't for the injury crisis we had but either way, I don't have any resentment towards him, I think he just had too many shortcomings as a manager. He's not arrogant, he's not insulting, he's not divisive, he's just a nice guy who got found wanting when under pressure but I don't understand the anger that a lot of Bolton fans have towards him. I'd happily have him back at Bolton as a coach, reserves manager or something like that because I feel he's got plenty of qualities and I wish it had worked out for him here.
Freedman is an atrocious manager though. How he got the Forest job is beyond me but it looks like he'll get sacked at some point, which I'm sure will delight their fans who already seem to dislike him. It's funny though because Freedman has finally got it that they're better with two up front and now his answer is to play long ball football...sound familiar? His tactical naivety is remarkable and he has very little going for him as a manager. His defensive tactics just seem to be 'defend deep and get yourself in front of the ball' but the one thing which really, really infuriated me when watching that football was the lack of pressing in our defensive third. I can't understand how a manager could ever send the players out to defend in that way but Freedman did and he still does at Forest, which has cost them a lot of goals too. What he's hoping for, literally, is the ball to hit one of the players and not go into the goal. That's it. There's no strategy to push the opponent out wide, they don't press in numbers, they don't mark, they don't look to intercept passes, all the players do is defend deep and hope to block shots when they come. I've never seen defensive structure as poor as that at any level of football and I think you'd have to drop lower than League Two to see teams routinely adopt similar tactics. It was like a moron who had only previously watched two football games in his life watched Chelsea's Champions League run a few years ago and, with a complete lack of tactical knowledge, decided that the best way to defend is just to get as many people behind the ball as possible. I don't have the same anger for what we did at the other end of the pitch under Freedman but I will say that the lack of support whenever we played a lone striker was pathetic and we constantly relied on individual ability to score goals rather than team work.
Lennon, on the other hand, is an impressive manager. I'm really like the way we set our team up and our failings at the moment are because, as I mentioned earlier, we have a squad made up of waifs and strays. It's mostly just players we had previously and nobody will take off us (Medo, Spearing, Pratley etc.) or players we were able to sign from elsewhere on the cheap (Heskey, Amos, Madine etc.) but as far as players who we'd keep if a bigger club came in for them, who would we actually put up a fight to keep? Davies? Clough? Vela? Maybe Clayton? That's it, those four (and I'm stretching it at four consider one is coming back from a frequently career altering injury) and the rest of the squad are disposable. If Freedman was in charge of this squad, we'd go down, I'd be certain of that but we're well organised under Lennon and that will save us. The place where we're at now actually bothers me though because I have a strong feeling that if Lennon was backed, even with a few million here and there, that we'd be able to go up and I find it very disappointing that we finally have a talented manager, who is doing well with what he's working with, and yet is having more resources stripped away from. I think we'll look back in a couple of years and see this period as a missed opportunity. I hope not but I think that's the way we're going. Lennon will either get poached by a club with decent money or he'll be blamed for our poor results and unfairly sacked.
If only we could have got someone like Lennon in after Allardyce was sacked or even after Coyle had gone.

Those pesky Germans have beat us to it again (I know it is not a training camp).
Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.

There's got to be a good kind of irony about the Germans stepping up to build camps to help.

Apparently we've signed Paul Rachubka on a free for one year. Lee Camp would have been more appropriate for this thread.
