I'll stick something about it in the Banter thread (General chit-chat)..) to keep it off the match details.clapton is god wrote:I bloody knew one of them was you! I looked up and down the line but couldn't place you, but I did tell my mate I suspected you were down there. Well done, it looked fun but they didn't half make you wait for your big moment.

weird match - has a feeling of meh - yet could have finished 3-5 with no complaints. Pretty quiet and flat crowd.
Back 5 is promising. Do have mistakes in them but both CBs have pace to recover. Can imagine Derik wondering if every fecker he'll come up against will be a 7 foot giant.
As others noted our problems are in midfield/ up front and I'd always look for a problem and its solution in the blend rather than the individual. Our CMs are both sitting deep and not getting up to support or go beyond the forwards. I know game management means retaining possession and taking a breather, but the number of times Mavies was picking the ball up off the back line and then instigating some pretty risky passing sequences across that back line was ridiculous. Was surprised NL didn't throw Spearing on to put a bit of zip into proceedings. Wellie is our only spark player but in typical winger fashion will excite and create but also infuriate his fellow players and fans with his final selection and doesn't track back. I actually think Feeney has changed his style since he first came. I seem to recall in his early days with us, he was a bit more attack minded and looked to get to the bye line to cross. He's not now doing that (presumably under instruction - to retain team shape, possession etc), unfortunately he's not clever or technical enough to do that to much effect. As a consequence he's a bit meh.
The Clough / Madine partnership just doesnt seem to be there or show the early blossoming - they just don't seem to play off each other. ZC was again a bit anonymous and Dobbie had more positive impact in his cameo. Thought Madine was better last night than Saturday, but not enough. Thought Emile with his more obvious use of his body strength, showed Madine how to ruffle defenders.
Overall the match was one that will quickly disappear from the memory. As a team, I don't think we are far away. Stating the obvious we need more goals. IMO it needs some personnel/ tactic changes rather than relying on finding the elusive 20 goal striker who is sitting around waiting for a chance with us (altho it would be nice).

Oh and I thought last night showed it to be a shame that we'd not got Bannan againStaffsTrotter wrote:weird match - has a feeling of meh - yet could have finished 3-5 with no complaints. Pretty quiet and flat crowd.

Fraid not mate. We left by the back entrance where our coach was about 10-40. Till then we were quaffing a drop of champagne in the upstairs lounge.twilight wrote:Before we go onto the banter thread on this, Tango, where you anywhere near the big microphone they had outside the ground at the end of the match??TANGODANCER wrote:I'll stick something about it in the Banter thread (General chit-chat)..) to keep it off the match details.clapton is god wrote:I bloody knew one of them was you! There's no comparison to be made here for me, Bish.thebish wrote:not having seen him live... is he better than, say, the raw Hall when we first had him?Bruce Rioja wrote:Da Silva has skill to burn but has no fecking clue what to do with it, when to release it, who to release it to, nor any recognition as to when others are better placed than him to take a shot on. He's young though, and too enthusiastic. I'm sure he'll learn.
In Da Silva there's a wonderful footballer who just needs to calm down a little and receive some decent, almost parental guidance.
With Rob Hall, as much as I've willed him on, I'm yet to see anything to suggest that there's a footballer in there anywhere.
May the bridges I burn light your way

I watched him on an internet stream for the blackburn game - and remember getting a bit frustrated with him... but the screen doesn't tell the whole story. glad to hear it - just a matter of whether time is on our side in coaxing that wonderful footballer out.. we kinda need some of that NOW!

Since everyone is talking about Silva:

You also have to remember Silva cannot really be considered a kid any more. He will be 23 in a few months and played a good few games in his career, albeit on loan. I like him though. As someone said earlier, he is one of only a small number of players who is capable of getting fans off their backsides (Davies and Clough from last season are the only others that come to mind).Bruce Rioja wrote:There's no comparison to be made here for me, Bish.thebish wrote:not having seen him live... is he better than, say, the raw Hall when we first had him?Bruce Rioja wrote:Da Silva has skill to burn but has no fecking clue what to do with it, when to release it, who to release it to, nor any recognition as to when others are better placed than him to take a shot on. ^^^ Ooooh, I dunno Malc. Trotter gets me off my seat, every time.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Off your seat, downstairs, out of the ground, into your car, walking solemnly into your house whilst there's still 37 minutes left to play?bobo the clown wrote:^^^ Ooooh, I dunno Malc. Trotter gets me off my seat, every time.

That, Boris, would only be the case if he's brought on with 38 minutes to go. But otherwise pretty spot on.boltonboris wrote:Off your seat, downstairs, out of the ground, into your car, walking solemnly into your house whilst there's still 37 minutes left to play?bobo the clown wrote:^^^ Ooooh, I dunno Malc.
