Well we've already landed Jonny X - The Invisible Striker, it would seem.Il Pirate wrote:Bijou Bob wrote:See what you've done Plymouth??! 150 odd pages reduced to fish jokes and still no goal scorer!!
As we may have funds available for two signings, how about a cheeky bid for Billy the Fish as second goalie?
May the bridges I burn light your way

I don't know who they are yet, but I know they will exist. The Premier clubs have too many players to need them all. I know the temptation might be to rush to market, but I would strongly counsel against spending our last beans on a 33-year-old with a limited skillset who doesn't even play in the position we need to strengthen.Tombwfc wrote:It just seems strange to ridicule the idea of signing Nolan but your own suggestion is to wait for players to come available who you don't even know exist.

Any loan player we sign now is for a maximum of 90 days. You can be certain if they do REALLY well they wouldn't be back here after that 90 day period and we'd be looking again.
Whereas we can sign Nolan for any length of time that is mutually agreeable. I get when people say a striker would be better as it is the most problematic position for us.
But the idea that Nolan wouldn't be able to moonwalk straight into the team is bonkers. He's played the majority of his career in the top flight, been picked the majority of the time and has from midfield in the top flight a very decent goalscoring record, especially considering he's not on the whole been at clubs nearer the top end of the division.
Contrast that with our midfield and Nolan could and would replace every single one of them, any day of the week.

As ever, I respect the right to an opinion, but at this point yours and mine diverge too widely for meaningful conversation.BWFC_Insane wrote:Contrast that with our midfield and Nolan could and would replace every single one of them, any day of the week.

Are you saying you think we have better midfield players?Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:As ever, I respect the right to an opinion, but at this point yours and mine diverge too widely for meaningful conversation.BWFC_Insane wrote:Contrast that with our midfield and Nolan could and would replace every single one of them, any day of the week.
Cos if you are then yes our opinions are wildly divergent. But I'd argue that there is little evidence to support a view that Nolan isn't better than anything we've got. One might argue age becomes a factor I suppose. But still....

If you'd said Nolan "was" better than what we have, then I'd agree. Right now, out of contract and let go by the Hammers that might need proving. Always been a fan of his attitude and loyaly to the Whites, but it's six years since he wore a white shirt, and he also has apparently expressed a wish to stay around London as his kids are settled there.BWFC_Insane wrote:Are you saying you think we have better midfield players?Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:As ever, I respect the right to an opinion, but at this point yours and mine diverge too widely for meaningful conversation.BWFC_Insane wrote:Contrast that with our midfield and Nolan could and would replace every single one of them, any day of the week.

if you go back and read what Barnetto has actually written - then it speaks for itself, is fairly clear and pateintly argued, and doesn't say that!

Well yes. But 33 and a career that has mainly been played in the top flight. Think he even played for West Ham this season in a game or two, at least off the bench. So all I'm saying is that whilst it is clear he's not a young player anymore his experience and quality is undoubtedly better than what we've got. Now there may be a question about his fitness that may be why he is club-less. Or as you say it may be because he wants to stay in London or wants too much.TANGODANCER wrote: If you'd said Nolan "was" better than what we have, then I'd agree. I get all of that. But I still think if he's fit enough he adds loads to the team that we don't have. We're basically filled in midfield and attacking areas with average (at best) championship players, inexperienced youngsters, injured Pratley and non-Scoring but decent Mark Davies. Nolan simply has to be better than the options we have and for me personally I think he's better than anything we've got. I don't know his fitness or if he's carrying an injury but he's better at 33 than the players we're playing week in week out.
In the same way that Gudjohnsen at 36 or 37 would still be a better option than Dobbie. Yes Dobbie might play more games and run around a bit more but after seeing them both I know who I'd have preferred in the squad. And the history and relative quality of the two players says everything.

Anyway moving away from a top trumps argument, manure won't be letting Wilson go out on loan.

If his argument is that we need to spend anything we've got on a hypothetical striker then I'd argue you can't make that case without knowing who the player is.
He says we don't need an "ageing and slow non-passing" midfield player. Which is possibly interpreted as he doesn't add to what we've got. Whereas I'm saying he is considerably better than any player we have in midfield and therefore his signing would be of benefit.
Again the argument might be "but we can only afford a striker". Which is fine, but then the question might still be whether Nolan is a better option than a striker, once we actually know who the striker might be......
