Today I'm happy about......

Every year we take the dog on holiday to the Llyn peninsula. This year new dog but same cottage. Lady Sainsbury has a cottage tucked into the valley overlooking the sea and there's a lovely clifftop walk that takes you past it. This evening on the way back, with the sun going down, we saw over a dozen porpoise frolicking in the surf.

A passing local said he'd lived there since1986 & never seen them before. A wonderful end to a lovely day

Where exactly on the peninsular, Harry?

Our accommodation is in the village of Clynog Fawr. The coastal walk is from Trefor harbour Monty. A truly beautiful part of the world

I have driven through there hundreds of times as my grandmother had a house in Llandedrogg, Harry. I have climbed each of what we called the Rivals near Trefor - I guess the Welsh call them Yr Eifl or some such. Once we could see those mountains we knew the journey was almost over. My favourite climb and spectacular view is Garnfadryn towards the end of the peninsular - if you've never done it is well worth the effort on a clear day.

^ oh wow Monty! I think we've heard them described as the 3 sisters and we climbed 1 today nearest to the coazt and over looking the Welsh language school and have done 1 of the others in the past. We'll give the other one a try perhaps next time. Last day tomorrow and Newborough Warren is calling again

Save Garnfadryn for next year! It stands alone and from the top you can see Snowdon, Harlech, Aberystwyth and Ireland - not to mention just about the whole Llyn peninsular. The Romans had a camp near the top as it was a great guard post.

I think The Rivals was just the way we English heard Yr Eifl. I'm not sure what it actually means - it could be the three sisters - have to ask Bobo.

Oh I did. Went several times as an adult living in Canada. My courtesy Aunt had a large house in Abersoch (her husband and later daughter were the local doctors).. The last time would be in 1992 when we brought my mother's ashes back to Bolton. I took the kids there and the Lake District. Now that generation has gone, and my kids have also left, I have not been back. But it is still fresh in my mind.

My inlaws live at Chwilog which is on the road between Pwllheli and Criccieth. we have walked up to the iron age hillfort on Tre'r Ceiri a few times. I also sometimes take my bike up Moelfre woods or to the mental DH tracks at Nant Gwrtheyrn!
FIL has a boat so do quite a bit of exploring along the coast, great sailing round to Porthdinllaen, dropping the anchor and going for a few pints in the Ty Coch! i like flying kites on Hells Mouth beach too.

my one bugbear about the Peninsula tho, its great if you have the weather but terrible when it rains - just because there are not enough nice pubs to hole yourself up in! none really, not ones you look forward to going back to. Ty Coch is great for sitting outside of in summer, as are the ones in Abersoch but all the rest seem to be grubby cheap eateries knocking out pints of carling or they're totally rundown shitholes in tiny villages where you feel as welcome as a Syrian in Dover. add to that a handful of contemporary wank holes with slates for plates that have started to appear too.

Some interesting conversations going on around me, mainly about getting smashed and dodging lectures. Don't think I'll be having that problem somehow.

You are correct. I blame my age for that. We stayed in the dip at Edern behind the garage. A lovely cottage with big garden and summer house.

two things - both related!

I have a new role that takes me to Lynton (North Devon) once or twice a week - a 4hr round trip...

rode over there for the first time yesterday...

1) on the way there (2pm) - GLORIOUS ride in the sun right over the top of Exmoor - stunning!! - happy about that!

2) on the way back (9pm) - dense fog, deep moonless dark skies, driving rain - visibility = just about zero... this for about 35 miles or so until I hit the M5...

happy about the awesomely brilliant, life-saving invention of Cats-eyes - without which (even if poorly maintained and therefore sporadic) I would probably be lying in a ditch now having gone off the impossible-to-see-where-it-goes road on a bend...
