I know someone who has worked at a couple of his clubs. The lad has talent and he's a good athlete, but believe it or not, he has no interest in football. He turns up, collects his wages, works just hard enough and goes home. Football is just a way of making money, which is allegedly why he has been poor at all of his clubs. He has enough stashed after his contract at Everton not to have to push himsel, so he doesn't and trying to motivate him has been all but impossible.

What is a fact at all levels of football us that players will follow the cash. There are few cases of romance involved in who signs for whom. Some may think a little more long term than others and a particular style of play/fit may matter to some. Geography has an impact with some but most of all an extra £500 a week wins the deal.
