Not sure what to think about this. Bolton has next to nothing to offer as a shopping centre except cheap jack outlets, tanning parlours, nail centres, a tattoo emporium and pawn shops. We've been left behind by Bury which has loads to offer. Nobody can afford the town centre rents yet the council is spending 14 million on a cinema and eating facility? Mind you, we have a skateboard park and Westhoughton has opened a trampoline extravaganza so that must help... :|

I visited the Vaults during the Food and Drink festival - which is really good IMHO.

I was surprised at what an exciting space it had become. That said - if Nandos is your flagship restaurant... Nothing against Nandos which does what it does pretty well, but I'm just a little disappointed...

I'm not sure that Bolton council has invested £14 million into this either. The article certainly doesn't say so.

But I totally share the despair about the town centre.

Instead of thinking "what can we have in the town centre that makes us stand out and have a USP?" in the same way Bury market flagships Bury, they've decided to try and make a mini version of the Middlebrook or even the Trafford Centre in Bolton.

Only way I can see it succeeding is if the council et al. continue to make getting out of Bolton via road and train and absolute chore. In fact close St Peters Way permanently and you'll probably find the town centre thrives. Even with Nandos as the "flagship restaurant".

Thing is with Nandos, it's widely popular and is an attraction. It might not be fine dining, but would such a restaurant take off in Bolton TC? Maybe if the place gets busy someone can open one in the vaults. Nandos is a good move IMO for a cinema complex particularly. Compared to what's going on now it's got to be an improvement.

This has nothing to do with the council as The Market Place is privately owned. As others have said, however, this is a such a wasted opportunity. The town centre desperately needs it's own USP to bring the masses back in to Bolton. Instead they've taken the easy option and gone for a Nando's.

There is a huge gap between Nandos and fine dining. Having a Nandos there is fine. Calling it your 'flagship restaurant' is a bit worrying!

And you can feck right off there!
St Peters way is the best road available to dodge Bolton town centre

I suspect when quite a few hard-working-people (tm) realise what the savage cuts in tax credits really means to their income, something will hit home and they might very well feel they were misguided!

It involves the overall appeal of the town centre. That is very much something "to do" with the Council. Further - who gave permission for it to go ahead? The Moonies?

it probably HAS got summat to do with the council ref. planning and regional strategic development bodies (representation on such bodies) - but I doubt the Council has spent £14million on it as Tango suggested...

Perhaps you should take it up with the Bolton News then? " CHICKEN giant Nando’s has been revealed as the flagship restaurant of the £14 million redevelopment of the Market Place."

The decision to clear out the vaults and have places to eat down there is a good one and one that the council will have no doubt been involved in. Now I can't be sure about this and stand to be corrected, but I doubt that the council had quite as much influence in the decision to have Nando's as the flagship restaurant. That said, this is the first and probably last time that you'll find me defending them.

No one doubts the cost of the redevelopment, but what thebish meant was that it's not the council who paid for it all as the Market Place is privately owned.

I didn't actually know that the Market Place was privately owned, so if that was misleading it was unintentional. I did but post the link in good faith.
