I was there this Summer TD.

If I could get my head round posting my own photos up on here I'd show you. Balcon de Europ is very commercial now but still a pretty town.

The El Salvador church is a welcome relief from the heat and noise of the day. Wish I was there now. Could do with a bit of 28 plus degrees heat.

Aye. I'm not sure I'd want to go back there now GtE. When I first went, back around 1986, Nerja was a small unspoilt and totally Spanish little town. I've been there probably half-a-dozen times since. Back then the lights were softer, no neon everywhere and the tourists were more German, French and Italian than Brits. I went to night school and learned to speak enough Spanish to get by comfortably with the locals, something I never regretted and a wonderful time I'll never forget.

My first trip to Nerja and Granada was in 1982. It was a very different world back then. The Alhambra was comparatively quiet and Nerja was, even in August, only moderately busy and about a third the size it is now.

My last Nerja visit was 3 0r 4 years ago. In May. Dont think I'll go again.

Nerja was still Spain as the Spanish intended it to be when I was there around 2000 (No buildings above three stories allowed). My bezzie mate's Dad lives there now - apparently it's changed beyond recognition.

Done a few paintings of Barrow Bridge boating lake because it was a favourite place to go in early teens and twenties. Did this last year sometime. Actual size is 12" x 9".

Tango - As an absolute aside, are you aware that they used to have a funfair down at Barrow Bridge? I saw a photo of it in last night's Evening News.

In my lifetime Barrow Bridge has only ever been a row of beautiful riverside cottages with some rather pointless steps at the end. No mill, no boating lake, no nowt. I can feel a book purchase coming along (If there is one).

^.. Thanks for bringing that up Bruce. Yes, there was a funfair that came up there on occasions, but I don't remember it being a permanent fixture. Is this the pic you mentioned from June 1953? or another one?( I missed last nights BN) Check the link as it's relevant.

1955 to 1960 I remember it best. Before that we went with parents onBank Holidays and Easter etc, but from 1955 it was a meeting point for loads of us teenagers. Lots of lads from Jonny Fold went up there. The boating lake was at the top of the slope on the left as you went up. You walked up past the cottages over the bridges on the right (they used to be tea-houses when we went for walks on Sunday afternoon, meeting girls and all that stuff. and as you reached the top the lake was on your left. You almost couldn't see it till you got there. It was filled in later but was a real memory of earlier times.

The pics fine here, Bruce, and so is the topic. Barrow Bridge, Moss Bank, Sixty three steps and Rivington were all a big part of my teen and twenties world. Loved it. That pic is a great guide to exactly where the lake was ( to the right of the fair) as you can see it all.

I haven't done any more Bolton ones. I've done a few other footy ones, but that's it at the moment for the Whites. I fancy a crack at the White Hot photo.

This is another view of the Barrow Bridge lake. I painted these from old photos because that's all that is left now of what for me was a reality and a happy memory. Frame is simulated but I like it and think its right for the painting.
