I'd always just assumed it was a common surname. I'd never made the connection...

Re: Sports Shield Investments Ltd
They've had at least one Warby on the BW board for at least as long as I've been following the club (30+ years). It goes back much further: in the 1920s Henry Warburton was club chairman AND the town's mayor.StaffsTrotter wrote:as well you mightLost Leopard Spot wrote:I'd always just assumed it was a common surname. think the warbies have been involved on the board for decades (Im sure chairman roles in past) but have never had the reputation of investing much into the club (rightly or wrongly).

I always find it amusing that Brett Warburton is so named with bread, in the Lancahire dialect, sounding almost exactly t'same.

Nobody remember the Warby's corner under the old scoreboard at Burnden? At one time a load of employees used to come to the home games still dressed in work whites.
Si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos?
Re: Sports Shield Investments Ltd
Spent a fair bit of time myself there in the late 50s, Tango. Can't say I remember the Warby's crew though but I do remember the chants from that part of the ground at the time. Huey Piano Smith's 'Don't you just know it' was a favourite. Remember that?TANGODANCER wrote:Nobody remember the Warby's corner under the old scoreboard at Burnden? No, not that Gudnib. I was courting strong at the time and got married in 59 and moved to Yorkshire for a couple of years. I remember the Warbies though and I knew Brian, the bloke who used to turn up in all black and a top hat at games. That scoreboard was real high tech equipment, tin number plates hung on nails at half time to check the scores against the programme.

Yes. I remember the scoreboard well. One of the chants in those days was 'The Happy Wanderer'. You can hear it on the video of the 58 Cup Final. Huey Piano Smith's song was adopted as being a bit less 'square'. It was sung for a number of years by the travelling support often when the opposition had missed a clear chance. Check it out on Youtube.TANGODANCER wrote:Gudnib wrote:Spent a fair bit of time myself there in the late 50s, Tango. The Warburtons do pay my dad's pension and he pays for his season ticket so they are contributing in some way?
Also, they're not as flush as you might think according to my dad.

All relative I suppose, but think they are more in the 'let them eat cake' brigade. Worth £500m according to grocers rich list in 2014.TonyDomingos wrote:Are they on the breadline?Andy Waller wrote:The Warburtons do pay my dad's pension and he pays for his season ticket so they are contributing in some way?

Bolton’s Warburton family are also up there with Britain’s wealthiest thanks a £30 million rise in their baking wealth.
The family-owned bakery, founded in 1876, is now run by three cousins, Jonathan, Ross and Brett - who is also vice-chairman of Bolton Wanderers FC.
They now have an estimated fortune of £530 million.
Perhaps some of the ire directed at ED & PG ought to have been spread around the rest of the board a bit more
Re: Sports Shield Investments Ltd
£530million would be about half the net worth of Trevor Hemmings. PNE owner, but chucking money (if you've got it) down an ever deeper hole isn't very businesslike.StaffsTrotter wrote:Or even more according to MEN in April 2015StaffsTrotter wrote:All relative I suppose, but think they are more in the 'let them eat cake' brigade. Re: Sports Shield Investments Ltd
Why should Warburtons invest? I don't get it. They are a Bolton business but I don't see any reason why that obligates them to chuck hundreds of millions away trying to support the football club.
