Still offside though surely? He was OFF the pitch, regardless of why, he can't be playing anyone onside if he's on his arse behind the line can he?
Rule 11.11 (The Guardian looked it up, not me):

"A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position," he says. "Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position."

Surely otherwise you'd just have keepers stepping off the field to play people offside?

Fair enough then!

Though there's a difference between being bundled off the field and being on your arse, and just walking off the field pointing and laughing.

But yeah, it makes sense I guess.

So unlike we all thought, it wasn't a terrible decision by a shite linesman but in fact a SUPERB decision by the best linesman in the lands? Or he got lucky ;)

I guess the point is, if he'd have been just on the field and sat on his ass, he would have certainly played the man onside...

And, being as he wasn't given permission to be off the field, he could've ran back on at any time and blocked a shot off the line.

Correct. Maybe the ref should've booked him for leaving the field of play without permission :-) just to rub it in. The post match interview with Kuyt, the guy just said "you realise the first goal was offside" blah blah, Kuyt just said yes but the ref gave it anyhow so what can we do, type of thing...

I love watching the Dutch play when they are on song and all guns blazing. We could learn so much if only we wanted to....
Same goes for the Germans.

Aye, Deutschlands a given. The Netherlands just make me embarassed about the way English football is run.

That would be the same players who consistently play all over Europe at the biggest clubs, who play for a country about 1/6th that of England, yet have a far better record than we do?

Those the ones you're thinking of?

Common sense should apply.

What exactly are the other Italian defenders expected to do in this situation ? Or say a defending player tried to slide tackle an opponent but missed and ended up hitting the advertising boards and the game continued...

If Panucci is classed as playing RVN onside then the other 3 defenders would have to drop back to the goal line because they cannot play RVN offside in this situation.
The only exception for offside would be if Buffon came out of the goal and stood beyond RVN making him offside. However, this would expose the goal and leave it unprotected from a shot.

Do a better job marking Van Nistelrooy? :conf:

You know that as soon as Panucci went down the linesman was praying for something like this to happen so he could get himself in the papers for making the RIGHT decision.

Makes sense to me, Tango. Officials are usually in the public eye for making dubious calls - surely they would welcome an opportunity to make a highly controversial call and be shown to be correct.

Ah, sorry. Your interjection was a trifle abbreviated for me to fully comprehend.
