He had a poor World Cup but I'd give it to Gerrard. The more responsibility he has, the better he performs. Appointing him captain might see us get the best out of him for England. I also think he's a better bet than Terry. As good a player as he is, he isn't as inspirational as Gerrard. Gerrard is likely to turn a game on its head, Terry isn't.

One of the best captains England had was Bobby Moore. He directed from the back and watched the whole picture. A defender can do this far better than anyone going forward. Beckenbaur was another example of this, Hiero yet another. That's why my vote is for Terry. He's a good player, committed to the cause and the players respect him. Beckham was an icon captain and not a commanding one. A captain commands from the bridge and gives the orders. You can't do this whilst attacking. Gerard needs to be forward to get the best out of him. He defends well enough (as I've said before) but is at his best when given more freedom up the park. Terry for me.

No!

While Gerrard is totally outstanding for Liverpool he can't seem to bring that to his international game. Was he even in Germany for the world cup this year?

I've a feeling you're just seeing this through your Anfield tinted glasses here. I'm not so sure that Gerrard should even be in the England squad (at least if Lampard is in there too) never mind as it's captain.

John Terry gets my vote.

i'm pretty sure he scored two goals for England, and i'm also pretty sure that means he scored more than any other English man in Germany throughout the month of June in competetive matches.

but John Terry gets my vote for Captain.

nice little dig though, every opportunity eh?

Terry for me. Lampard and Ferdinand would be bench warmers.

Who appointed you into the 'site harmony' police?
I wasn't having a dig at anyone, I was sarcastically pointing out that Gerrard is a different player in an England shirt and that he was neither use nor ornament throughout the world cup (in spite of the goals), particularly in regards him being the next captain, which is after all what the thread is about.

But I think you knew that already. I suppose you're just using it as an opportunity to have a dig, eh?

Terry for me - captaincy is not about skill, flair or goal scoring - it's about leadership, dedication and leading by example. It seems to me that Terry brings 100% every time even if not on form, and that he is generally respected.

Terry wins my vote, he would bleed for the cause. Suprisingly the back four at the WC were effective.

Terry. He is more likely than the rest to start regularly. Gerrard and Lampard are both too poor too often. They would be like Beckham: making him captain made him a lock to start even when his form was poor.

Yep - I agree with this and I've made the same case to my mates.

Another point, I thought that Gerrard was hampered by tactics though i want Terry as captain. I love the scousers they bleed for their team.

Interestingly, a poll by Englandfans and the BBC shows Terry nudging ahead of Gerrard. But will McClaren do the right thing?

I like how Beckham got one vote too. From his Dad I guess.
