RIP Phil. Once a white forever a white. He oversaw a period of our history that will never be forgotten. Very sad news.
Re: Phil Gartside
I saw that and thought it was a little bit arsey considering the man's dead, but the full quotes do him more justice.
On another note, I did find it somewhat amusing that even Marc Iles stories on Gartside's death now prominently feature quotes from Dean Holdsworth, while Owen Coyle himself appears to have written the last two paragraphs of Alan Nixon's tribute. Some things never change.
Anyway, respect always to Gartside for what he did here. I hope he was able to raise a smile at Kaiyne's winner on Saturday, and leave knowing that the club will be alright in the end. For all his faults, here's hoping our next chairman loves the club as much as he did.Big Sam said, Sky Sports wrote:"It was obviously devastating news for them and me. I was aware of the illness but kept that close to myself and obviously my condolences go out to the family," said Allardyce.
"My memories are great, even though later on we may not have seen eye-to-eye.
"The journey we took from 1999 to 2007 was magical and we took that journey together.
"We basically rebuilt a football club that achieved great success and those are the memories I have of Phil.

If you have read his book, you would see that anything else would be hypocritical.LeverEnd wrote:Reasonable and genuine from Big Sam that.
He felt that PG was half-hearted in BWFC going for the very top.
Ironically, given what has happened since, PG felt we could not afford to compete at the very top and it would be too risky
So after 2007 they were not on good terms.

I've not, but I'm aware of the fall out. No false sentimentality, just a respectful acknowledgement of a sad event, I think he got it spot on.bw@bw wrote:If you have read his book, you would see that anything else would be hypocritical.LeverEnd wrote:Reasonable and genuine from Big Sam that.

I'd like to think the club and town will do him the same for Garty as they did for Nat!

Ah, but BWFC-I knows more about what went on between BSA and Garty than BSA does. FACT - coz Nixon told him.bw@bw wrote:not my opinion - that was in the Big Sam book.BWFC_Insane wrote:Not really the right place for this but that isn't true.bw@bw wrote:If you have read his book, you would see that anything else would be hypocritical.LeverEnd wrote:Reasonable and genuine from Big Sam that.

Re: Phil Gartside
Don't see why that is funny. Around the time Sam left I sent PG an email expressing some concern about things going on at the club. He replied and asked if he could ring me. We had a chat for about an hour discussing things that were happening and reasons Allardyce left.Bruce Rioja wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:

It said a lot that a football chairman was prepared to take up his time doing that but it showed how much he cared for the club and the fans.

Re: Phil Gartside
Since the news of his death was released I've been taken aback by how well-respected he seemed to be by English football as a whole, most notably by the ex-players.
We went through one of the greatest periods in our history under his stewardship and for that I will always be grateful.

There re numerous tales of his approachability and decency. It's fair to say that when things got very difficult he retreated, which was a shame as he had a lot of good to tell. Let's remember such a good guy. The are few & far between.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
