Caroline Lucas was quite specific on r5 that we ,(the UK ) work longer hours than most of our western counterparts . This 4 day week proposal wasn't about doing the same hours in less time
Just less hours.

I could vote for that!

Anyhow, I'm in the process of setting up Frankie International Ltd in the Cayman Islands...Then all I gotta do is sell it my house.

Productivity is based on outputs not inputs.

Why would we all need to work more hours on a four day week? It's archaic thinking like that that's holding us back.

Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Yes, but many industries there isn't the luxury of a 4 day week and then shutting down for 3 days. So your inputs would be spread more thinly.

Reality is that outputs cannot be sustained if you are operating for shorter times. And if the argument is that personal productivity would go up, I'd agree. But that would not compensate in many cases for loss of time.

Plenty of us who aren't looking to do as little as is possible are signed off of the working time directive. ;)

BWFC-I. The company I work for has two UK factories each running a three shift system for 24 hours a day. Efficiency is a real issue as the night shift is the least productive, despite the same lines running at the same speeds. This is where circadian rhythm was first highlighted as an issue.
It costs us more to run the night shifts due to higher wages plus the additional costs of having the lights and heating on all night yet they don't churn out as much finished product.

Get this though, and some miserable actuary has actually worked this out. The guys on the night shifts actually have a shorter life expectancy that their day shift colleagues. It costs us more to insure them as they're more prone to injury and statistically there are more people that have heart attacks at 4 in the morning than at any other time, and their death in service payments to their families are less, too.

Just cut the night shift and have a 9 day week, then

I didn't catch Corbyn on Channel 4 with Paxman. But May wasn't very convincing... How bad did Corbyn get savaged?

I didn't see the audience q and a, so missed most of it all. But the Paxman bit, she was about as clued up as Diane Abbot.

The lack of substance is stunning. You'd have thought she could at least pretend. If Labour had a Blair type character in charge they'd absolutely wipe the floor with her.

Have heard Corbyn's interview this morning. I guess as he was doing the mumsy rounds to announce his free childcare places he clearly wasn't expecting a little fiscal scrutiny. At least he didn't do an Abbott and start plucking random figures from the ether.

I knew someone would say that, I had a bet with myself it would be Hoboh.

Obviously not. But someone with charisma who could charm the electorate. May would be absolutely dead in the water. Even Kinnock would win against her.

Again, you say 'even Kinnock', but Kinnock was the moderniser of the Modern Labour party. Let's be clear, without Kinnock there would have been no Blair.

Genocidal liar? That's a bit...playground.

Kinnock would absolutely wipe the floor with her. Any leader of either major party back to Foot, minus Howard and IDS would wipe the floor with her.

However while I'm no Corbyn apologist (the useless sod), really don't see the problem with his interview this morning. As BR says, he didn't start playing numberwang. It's not a spelling bee. I'm not sure why they suddenly have to have all the figures on the tip of their tongue. "Hang on, we've worked it out and I've got the figure here" seems perfectly fine to me.

It was meant to be, but clearly I misjudged the sensitivity of current moods.

There's absolutely no point in dragging out hypothetical clap-trap regarding who'd have done well against who - to quote LP Hartley - "The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there".

I'm more interested in the current election and personally I'm no further forward in that I can't vote for either just now.

Going back to TV debates / interviews and so on, my personal thoughts as to why May refused to appear on a live TV debate are nothing to do with either perceived arrogance nor 'running scared'. I think it's simply because party advisors realised that the worst thing that could have possibly happened is that she'd have been ripped apart (ironic for a pro fox hunter) most certainly by Nicola Sturgeon. She's managed to run-down any scrap of leadership credibility she may have had single-handed, she's hardly needed a hand.
