I'm being made redundant. It's my own fault, the multinational I work for are relocating the portion of the business I work for, and I refused the move.
In line with the relocation policy, and statutory notice periods etc., today was the first day I've met my 'replacement' in order to induct him/her over the next twelve weeks before I disappear forever.
Suffice to say that I've been in place for nearly a quarter of a century, having progressed up the ranks, from a starting position of having a degree [a science degree, admittedly, in an engineering position, but a degree nonetheless].

So, fxck me, in marches this kid this morning who will "be doing my job" in twelve weeks time...
S/he has an A level in Textiles. S/he freely admitted s/he doesn't know what a tapestry is: Is it "a kind of Muriel?" it inquired. S/he has absolutely no grasp of engineering. S/he has no knowledge of any industry standard acronyms. S/he doesn't know what a database is, despite the main function of my job being the smooth, efficient and accurate running of a very complicated, safety-critical database.

If you plan on travelling by rail anytime soon I suggest you sit towards the back of the train. Your chances of survival are greatly increased by that simple strategy.

Tough luck mate. Way it is today. Bob Dylan warned us back in 1964 times were a-changing..How right he was. Hope you get something sorted out.

p.s How come everyone calls themselves practitioner after their job title? A young girl today on T.V said she was a "welding practitioner"...why not just " a welder" ?

Because it doesn't sound good enough. A bit like the people who work in Costa are now known as Barista's as though they are (re-)inventing coffee not making a cup of the stuff.

I think the best I've heard was a "glazed surface technician". He was a window cleaner.

Cheers. The dog will be over the moon. The missus has probably already put a 'hit' out on the dark web.
Strangely enough, she was complaining about the extended compulsory wait 'til pension age for herself until very recently. Now that it's almost confirmed I won't be working anymore, she's suddenly quite keen to continue in her career for a few more years. I don't think it's entirely down to the "financial gap in our plans" either...

Er...fairy-tales, cough...and Kiera Knightly....A view to be savaged at will....

I always had Kiera down as a level headed, well educated and quite intelligent "person"(purely from reading and interviews etc)..so why is she banning her child from seeing "Cinderalla" on the basis of women persons not needing to be saved by men persons , and you shouldn't kiss a sleeping person.......in a fxxxing fairytale??? ...a fxxking fair-tale???

Since her child will presumably mingle with other children who might see such views as a little "wierd" considering the whole country's (worlds?) kids are currently about to celebrate Halloween, witches, ghouls, zombies and vampires....and stuff, and Christmas is approaching with all the magical things that only childhood can celebrate and appreciate like Santa, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc etc..(lets face it, 13 and and you're being called a wimp if you don't smoke, say "fxck" and worse) might not K's children be victimised because of her desire to be the sword swinging, long-bow shooting heroine of Camelot in real life? Childhood for most young persons is the happiest and most magical time of your whole life, let the kid persons have their times and see the benefits of imagination and magic, the realities of the rest will come all too soon.

I thought kissing sleeping persons was in Sleeping Beauty, not Cinderella - and that Cinderella was saved by a fairy godmother. Obviously my childhood was too long ago and I get things wrong now.

She believes it reinforces gender stereotypes. I have some sympathy with her view. But I think banning her child from watching it is going a bit far. And I think the particular thing she's chosen is one of the less offensive examples of this sort of thing.

As a society we need to do more to prevent these early gender stereotypes from becoming embedded into psyche of kids though. It is important because otherwise it becomes a self perpetuating circle.

Ah, I see. Sort of.."Kiera Knightley saves the world" sort of thing. So, her daughter will grow up doing horse riding and archery and stuff while her son (if when she has one? ) stays home and minds the kids and reads them all about "Little Persons" and "Queen Arthur" etc? Got it. Most eras find that the best way to get kids to do things is to tell them not to. Before we know it we'll be back in 1940 with Winona Churchill as first Person of the Admiralty . Roll on Kiera, what a happy life your kids have coming....

I suspect its because she wants her daughter to grow up believing she can do anything and not with an ingrained sense of relying on a man to do things for her?

Her method may be a little off here - but the sentiment is a good one I think.

My childhood was ruined by not being allowed to kick the girls as hard as the boys when we all played football soccer together.

I guarantee that Keira grew up watching movies and reading books like Sleeping Beauty. Did she turn up to be a meek subservient woman in the shadows of men? No. She just comes across as a bit of a dick.

Jane Austen's story, Pride and Prejudice, was made into a film which tells the tale of a man, Mr Darcy, saving the day by finding the villain paying his debts and forcing him to marry Elizabeth Bennet's young sister and saving her honour. Who played Elizabeth Bennet in the film? Oh, er, it was Kiera Knightley...(apparently worth some 50 million dollars of a private fortune from such roles)....Jane Austen undoubtedly got it wrong...

Well, here they're talking about parenting. I'd have thought that's exactly what you think women should do?!

Why don't you butt out and leave Keira to it. You get back to your rocket science or whatever you do

That's a whole lot more than parenting snowy.

Typical lefty clone thinking, we are all the same, gender is a mere label. well sorry it don't work like that everyone is not equal, should I object because a female is being paid vast sums of money, in films, in Keira's case and earning more money than if I, a male, were emptying bins?

Girls don't do what boys do from any age in general and that has bugger all to do with gender stereotyping, try hormones and body makeup for starters.

It appears there are a small group of people who are not trying to push females forwards but dumb down the role of males, different roles that exist throughout nature.

Anyway, get back to bleeding money for old rope or whatever you do.

What on earth are you blathering on about? "Dumb down the role of males". What? All she was trying to do was to show her daughter she can achieve anything she wants to and isn't reliant on a "man" to save her or for completeness. She may have done so in a bit of a clumsy way, but I'd have thought whatever its a good message.
