He was poor at Stanley, so I'm not really convinced he'll do any better here in a defence that looks very low on confidence.
A ringing endorsement if ever there was one!

Re: January 2022 Transfer Thread
Jordan Shipley from Coventry being linked to us, never heard of him before just now, but he's been promoted from this level and played a season in the championship, so sounds good to me.

DSB mentioned him in the previous thread
I think he'd be a very shrewd signing. Played 1370 minutes in the Championship last season.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Thread
He's another I've studied in the past. let me dig it out
EDIT From Sun 21 Nov:
Jordan Shipley, a six-foot left-sided midfielder who's just turned 24, played 31 times in Cov's promotion season and 27 last season, but not a minute this – and his contract expires next summer. Asked about the prospects of a January loan, Mark Robins was cagey rather than dismissive. A local lad who's come up two divisions with the club, he won't be begging to leave but is clearly drifting away. 19 goals and 14 assists from 151 games in all comps; can play wide left, central or at 10.

Just as a gauge - If by the end of next week we have signed or resigned Charles, Fossey, Xav, Trafford, Morley, Dempsey and Shipley, how will people feel about the window at that stage? Not for an argument, just to know how individuals will feel about it.

If, as promised, it solves us leaking 1.6 goals per game and gets us scoring at the other end - I'll be fine with it.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:35 pmJust as a gauge - If by the end of next week we have signed or resigned Charles, Fossey, Xav, Trafford, Morley, Dempsey and Shipley, how will people feel about the window at that stage? 1.5 goals leaked per game coming right up...Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:43 pmIf, as promised, it solves us leaking 1.6 goals per game and gets us scoring at the other end - I'll be fine with it.

Marginal gains are ok when you're near the top seeking an advantage not when the ship is sinking and you need to patch a fcuking hole quickly. So David Brailsford can feck right off.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:47 pm1.5 goals leaked per game coming right up...Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:43 pmIf, as promised, it solves us leaking 1.6 goals per game and gets us scoring at the other end - I'll be fine with it.

That we’ve not addressed the problems and continue to recruit players who don’t fix the issues we’ve had in the squad.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:35 pmJust as a gauge - If by the end of next week we have signed or resigned Charles, Fossey, Xav, Trafford, Morley, Dempsey and Shipley, how will people feel about the window at that stage? The priorities are clear.
1) A proven and experienced first choice goalkeeper.
2) A centre half who can defend. Organise. Win headers . Compete physically.
3) A midfield player who has presence and an engine and wins us the ball, let’s us press, and crucially puts themselves about the pitch.
4) A striker who can hold the ball up and help the system we are trying to play work.
That is the 4 things that will improve us.

We need dramatic improvement, I agree.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:50 pmMarginal gains are ok when you're near the top seeking an advantage not when the ship is sinking and you need to patch a fcuking hole quickly. So David Brailsford can feck right off.
My biggest concern is that we need key players to hit the ground running, but two of the ones we have signed are not fully fit and nor would Dempsey be if we got him.
Entirely possible we are points adrift before they all get up to speed.

You don't feel 3 and 4 would be improved by Dempsey and Charles?BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:58 pmThat we’ve not addressed the problems and continue to recruit players who don’t fix the issues we’ve had in the squad.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Thread
Dempsey would currently improve us a lot, and would be the best signing of the window IMO if the club can get this done and would possibly be our new captain - Charles looks decent therefore I think that we still need another striker and an experienced vocal No1 keeper (along with Dempsey)GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 7:01 pmYou don't feel 3 and 4 would be improved by Dempsey and Charles?BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:58 pmThat we’ve not addressed the problems and continue to recruit players who don’t fix the issues we’ve had in the squad.

I doubt that Evatt will sign another CB in this window whilst we have Santos, Johnston, Aimson & Baptiste however he will probably bring in a replacement for Baptiste in the summer.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Thread
Maybe but I’d absolutely prefer more out and out obvious types that add that physicality in those areas. I’m not totally convinced Charles plays on his own that well.GhostoftheBok wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 7:01 pmYou don't feel 3 and 4 would be improved by Dempsey and Charles?BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 6:58 pmThat we’ve not addressed the problems and continue to recruit players who don’t fix the issues we’ve had in the squad.

Apropos of nowt. Gotta love football forums. Rumour on the Gillingham forum (from a reliable source - doesn't come with a better guarantee than that) was that we pitched £75k for Dempsey and got turned away on Friday...

Press gossip is we put in just over 100k and got told to come back with better, which we did. No idea if they took the second offer.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 7:33 pmApropos of nowt. Pretty much spot on, I think.Bertie Wooster wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 7:11 pmDempsey would currently improve us a lot, and would be the best signing of the window IMO if the club can get this done and would possibly be our new captain - Charles looks decent therefore I think that we still need another striker and an experienced vocal No1 keeper (along with Dempsey)

Ideally we should have replaced Gilks and Baps with lads who can be relied upon for 7/10 performances every week and to organise things a bit. Those cost money, though, and we went with the budget options.
I have absolutely no issues with the players we did sign as individuals. It's just Johnston is raw, Aimson is quality back up and Dixon is a #2 all day at this level. We needed lads who took our defence up a level, but we're (in)arguably not as good there as we ended last term, when viewed as a unit. We knew this going in, though, and hoped for the best. Criticism of Evatt and Markham for that call is valid.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Thread
I'd be hopeful we'd made good strides addressing the lack of energy and urgency, and be reasonably confident we'd have more bite if not necessarily physicality. I'd also be concerned we hadn't adequately attempted to resolve any of the deficiences in defence, namely an organising centre-half, full-back competition, or a more commanding, competent goalkeeper.
A stronger midfield should theoretically assist our currently calamitous defence organisation and I'd be keeping my fingers crossed that that's how it plays out.
