Presumably one answer is that he started one mile north of the spot near the south pole where the circumference of the earth is one mile. The other would be the north pole. And as for burying survivors I would hate to see an aircraft carrier fly across our border!

Yes. I removed the white bear element normally associated with that question to allow that answer.
