Dirty, dirty Leeds
Ken Bates is simply a sickening man. This might just make you feel sorry for Leeds; it certainly makes you weep for their creditors, including the local ambulance service and St John's. Two mysterious offshore creditors agree to annul the debts as long as the club is sold to Bates? Anyone smell fish?

On the bright side Ricketts will get paid in full.
Actually I can't believe this sort of thing is allowed to happen. Over here I would expect a government ordered inquiry and forensic audit, followed by fraud charges. Still, our laws may be different.

I've mentioned this before but if you want a gut-wrenchingly effective exploration of the terrible ways in which football is run, buy/borrow The Beautiful Game? by David Conn, the author of this Leeds piece. Been a while since a book made me alternate between wanting to punch and wanting to cry. And always, always among the creditors are St John's Ambulance.Leyther_Matt wrote:How on earth can Leeds get away with this? Paying so little of the debt owed to the Ambulance Service etc is nothing short of a disgrace, though if one club was ever going to dodge such payments, then LUFC would be it.

Cheers for that, I'll keep an eye out for it.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:I've mentioned this before but if you want a gut-wrenchingly effective exploration of the terrible ways in which football is run, buy/borrow The Beautiful Game? by David Conn, the author of this Leeds piece. This happens all the time in business, although not on such a grand scale. There are plenty of people who are on their seventh and eighth company directorships having had their previous businesses go bust, which has a knock on effect on other, smaller enterprises.
This isn't the first time Leeds have done this. IIRC they wiped out £50 million of debt previously. With the masses of money around now, it's time for football's authorities to look at changing their rules.

While we're on the subject of books - and Leeds - I also heartily recommend The Damned Utd, David Peace's worryingly intense fictionalised account of Brian Clough's 44 days at Elland Road. It's OK, you can hate Leeds and read it, in fact that would be a positive boon.Leyther_Matt wrote:Cheers for that, I'll keep an eye out for it.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:I've mentioned this before but if you want a gut-wrenchingly effective exploration of the terrible ways in which football is run, buy/borrow The Beautiful Game? by David Conn, the author of this Leeds piece. What Leeds have done is totally despicable. Amazing that it is all above board and perfectly legal. The total arrogance shown by Bates is shameful. Gartside has publicly said that everyone who is owed money by Bolton will be paid back.
The rule of a 10 point deduction for going into administration will now apply and be carried over for the following season. It's a pity Leeds escaped this ruling. Scum.

Simply the best book on "football business" ever written.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:I've mentioned this before but if you want a gut-wrenchingly effective exploration of the terrible ways in which football is run, buy/borrow The Beautiful Game? by David Conn, the author of this Leeds piece. And don't think that Leeds started it.
It starts with Arsenal before the First World War.
Arsenal have never been relegated. They just bribed their way back to the top in 1918.
Compared to that Bates is a novice.
Slightly vearing off topic, Exeter City's former chairman was jailed today for fraud relating to purchasing the club. Slightly different cirucmstances though.Montreal Wanderer wrote:On the bright side Ricketts will get paid in full.

To be fair the article did say Leeds would sue if the suggestion of fraud was repeated outside Parliament.Zulus Thousand of em wrote:They obviously haven't got their thick Yorkshire skulls around parliamentary privilege!Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Kuddly Ken threatens to sue local MP who raised questions about it in the Commons.
