Snow Joke.

Post by TANGODANCER » Tue Dec 02, 2008 11:54 am

Got up this morning to two-and-a-half inches of snow in Farnworth. No big deal except the public transport's behaving like we're in Siberia. Bus twenty minutes late and train stopping all over the place with reports of hold-ups, delays and cancelattions. Lord help us if we ever get two-and -half feet instead..

From a quick look at BBC Breakfast this morning there were signal problems causing train delays from Bolton-Manc, not the weather.

But yes, we're hideously ill-equipped to deal with even the smallest of cold spells. It's a joke.

Aye, snowflakes must have landed on the signal boxes. Buses don't have signals though.

Nobody was ready for it. They gritted feck all in Bolton. They shut David Lloyd's because nobody could get up the hill. All the folk who park up then walk to work were buggered

Days like this make me glad to be an 'agile worker'

i.e. I'm at home in the warmth.

Took me 2 and a half hours to get from Horwich to Rochdale this a.m. Both Junction 19 and 21 of the M62 were closed due to ice. Inconsiderate bastards!

I gave up trying to get out of Bury onto the M66 after an hour and a half. I was only a mile away from home too.

We have to deal with it Monty. It's the local authorities that can't seem to. Crazily enough, I'm in central Manchester now with no snow in sight. Twill be a different picture when I get home, whatever time that may be.

Set off in snow.

car slipping and sliding.

parked it.

tramped to bus stop ten mins away.

Chaos on road. nothing moving either way.

phoned into work.

went into supermarket.

bought bottle of red wine.

Pulled coat and scarf around me, and, with a litle cheeriness in my step, set off for home. :D

While I know no one uses snow tyres (which I did not until they became mandatory this year) over there, do you have ABS brakes, or the skills to pump on and off to avoid toboganning and maintaining control? A couple of inches should not the cause the chaos I'm reading about here.

I suppose it does take getting used to and getting it every year helps. This is a typical suburban street scene here when it snows - taken a couple of years back (note the guy ploughing driveways is going the wrong way on a one way street and has to back up).
