Could be worse. We could be Everton.
I think the problem is "wholesale changes" this early in the season. The players still don't know each other well, they're still battling for fitness...we should be trying them in fits and starts with our regulars...
Ah well...the FA Cup's got our name on it this year!!

Poor lineup IMO. Too much change to warrant a good attempt at the cup not only did we change 8 of the first 11 that started played Villa we also swapped our tactics.
We didn't go like for like, I can't see a real ballwinner in the team tonight and I don't think we had pace on either wing, which meant creativity down the middle. Sure this newboy is allegedly fast but what do we do with Klasnic who is also not the fastest player we have up front.
We didn't pay the cup enough respect and we got punished for it. I'd imagine a first team would've done wonders at Burnley tonight but with such a stark contrast to the style and players we end up biting the bullet and going out of the cup.
It's really sad as I thought Coyle would've been the man to get us up for games like this. Hopefully he's saving all his energies for the Man Utd game but at the minute it seems like an opportunity lost, especially considering the sort of runs he achieved whilst managing Burnley prior to their promotion.

A run, I do believe, based on beating many better teams than ourselves at home. They have a knack of this sort of thing. Whether it's pampered footballers getting a shocked that there are people with less teeth than they have cars being so close to them or whatever, tonight was never going to be easy.Mar wrote:Poor lineup IMO. Bob on there Mar. Coyle talked it up pre-season in his forum, about wanting a pop at the cup - but that line up was never going to beat a spirited Burnley tonight. Cohen were unfit. As was Klasnic. Blake - I didn't understand what role he played. Alonso and Moreno were a bit off pace and fitness of the game. I think given the extra days rest ahead of Sunday, we could have risked a bit more tonight.
Clattenburg, whilst he didn't ruin or change the game - was astonishingly poor. Missed some blatant, blatant decisions. And kept making up for shite decisions with gimmies - where he'd just blow for a nonesense foul just because he should've flagged goal kick rather than corner. Titwank.
And would love to know why we insisted on playing to Davo's strengths - when he weren't on the pitch. Won nowt in the air all night and never were. But Bogdan kept hesitating with his roll outs - so mustn't have been given instruction to do anything but punt it forward.
Davies had a good game - some really good midfield play and linked up well with the front players and Moreno. Ultimately not critical enough in the final third to win the game and didn't deserve a win unfortunately.
Glad I went. Cracking backing for Coyle.

Ha! Remember our "fresh" players against the Arse last week?General Mannerheim wrote:Hell fire I feel crushed, totally never expected to lose that. Thought for the first 40 minutes the idea was good. Cohen, Davies and Blake were surprisingly bright with the ball, some good diagonals to the new Spanish Lad and Taylor. We seemed to just fall flat after the goal and completely run out of steam. It felt like I'd given the team talk at half time, ie "its only Burnley in the cup, who cares?".
No surprises, as always Clattenburg is a f*ckin awful ref.

Was a good crowd. S'pose no surprises given the obsession with Coyle round those parts, but I guess at our lot at around 3k ish?? Might also have had something to do with the prices, feel a bit less peeved with 15 sheets than say 25-30 that it could have been.

Mark Davies looked quicker than I remember for a while the first half, also made some good passes..
Moreno is quick but looked like a typical young player on the wing in terms of decision making, to be expected.
Alonso - I thought did not play well sadly.
Of the first team we'd have Knight and Steinsson (and Ricketts as a stand in) so to lose 1-0 away at a top half Championship club in a fairly balanced contest is neither a surprise nor shameful once that XI have gone over the line.

It's fine, we should probably call it quits now though, we're about equal right? I just hope the regrets don't affect Coyle too much as he prepares for a Premiership home game against Manchester United.
