I once read something about his problems being brought on by the breakdown of a move to Real Madrid when he was at the height of his powers.Lord Kangana wrote:I too never knew of the coke abuse, but I was under the impression that I'd heard at the time that the reason we got him was because he was having some kind of mental health issues. By which I mean I'm sure he'd had some kind of breakdown in Portugal or other and Sam thought he could weave his magic?Il Pirate wrote:Interesting note tho about Jardel's coke abuse. I never knew that. Goes someway to explaining why he was sh*te after scoring so many in the years prior to coming to us.
I'm sure I've read that, any one else?

Apparently, there are some that cause the wearers to do a somersault every twenty paces. They're called flip-flops.Gary the Enfield wrote:They would be miracleflops!thebish wrote:wonderflops...

get a grip!! neither of those even comes close to all-time flop lists...H. There are signs that he could turn it around this season, but at this juncture he should be on the list.
Also Shittu.

Considering wages and the transfer fee, Shittu cost us between £330,000 and £400,000 per appearance, depending on what his settlement was.
In his 12 appearances, our record reads won 1, drew 3, lost 8.
The one win was a 4-1 over relegated Boro.
I just can't imagine that in terms of finances and results, we've done much worse than that.

What about Len Cantello?H. Pedersen wrote:Considering wages and the transfer fee, Shittu cost us between £330,000 and £400,000 per appearance, depending on what his settlement was.

Oppps, sorry, he never played for us on SKY

In fairness to HP the article talks about the Premiership years. If we were to put such a ridiculous arbitrary cap on, and also use the articles own expensive failure definition, Shittu and Elmander must be up there, mainly because we haven't had that many expensive players. They're certainly both ahead of Blessing Kaku, who only seems to b there coz the author could only name three Bolton players. Does Deano's fan favourite status count him out, despite being shit?
Basically what I'm saying is, it is a wank article which manages to cock up completely quite a good concept.

Fair enough, but doesn't mean everyone has to start using that yardstick.CAPSLOCK wrote:thebish introduced all time
FWIW, I would put Holdsworth right near the top of Sky-gen players, bearing in mind we were turning over only around 10 million when we signed him
Aye Sky gen players I would too, record signing, massive money especially compared to turnover (he must still be in our top 10 record signings, and was all the way up to Diouf right?). As for pre-sky, I must admit I'm too young, though discounting money, which I think misses the point of this kind of thing, which is crushed expectations (buck up Mr Petrov) I've heard the names Gregory, John, and Lee, Sammy?

Without checking up on my creaking memory, Gregory probably only cost us a few bags of balls
Can only remember on game he played
Similarly, Lee wouldn't have been that big a drain
The old timers like me n Bruce n Worthy would always quote Cantello and Clement
We signed them two at the time Spurs signed 2 useless Argies

In a time of Sky largesse, and the biggest deal they've ever struck, Owen's empty purse is a sure sign that Shittu and Elmander were right up there as ruinous business. Holdsworth stands alongside, Todd backed to the hilt only to redeliver first division football and near financial oblivion. Cue Sam and his wheeler dealing. We have to hope for a bit of repeat business.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Aye, cos no other clubs are skintLord Kangana wrote:Owen's empty purse is a sure sign that Shittu and Elmander were right up there as ruinous business
You infer Sky chucking loads of money at the game sees all clubs splashing money north, south, east and west
Owens empty purse is due to us not yet cashing in our chips (Cahill and Muamba would create a nice little fund) and the ridiculous salaries clubs pay their players
I just hope when he signs folk they're better than Alonso appears to be

We bought playersLord Kangana wrote:Just repeating what you said. The increased sky money was what you defended the action with, wages to turnover, transfer fees etc. Where is it gone?
Some, though not all, have appreciated in value
Soon, we'll trade some of em, then re-invest (maybe)
That was the policy introduced my Davies and Gartside - ie bring in younger players with a potential for re-sale
The stick you are using to beat Megson can be used to beat all clubs
Maybe they've all got poor managers or maybe the games fcuked and thats why we've no money?
