I'm with you, thebish, there aren't half some morons in this world of ours.

Half wits and guns are a dreadful combination. Just yesterday an N.Z. lass was killed by a myopic 'hunter' whilst she was cleaning her teeth at a camp site. Yes, a camp site for crying out loud! http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... d=10682703 Only a month ago a young fellow was killed whilst 'hunting' in Victoria (Aus) http://www.bordermail.com.au/news/local ... 95028.aspx. I've never been a-hunting we will go (and never will) and thus cannot comprehend how any one can mistake a human for a deer.

Sorry, thebish, to broaden your subject but such occurrences seem not to be rare. I could go on (there was a recent proposal for allowing 'hunters' into our national parks with a remit to reduce feral animal populations). Can you imagine the mayhem? I live within a national park and I most certainly can.

Firefighters in London are to strike on Bonfire Night in a row over new contracts, their union has said.

The 47-hour action will be the third strike date since the Fire Brigades' Union (FBU) announced strike action.

It said the dispute centred on plans to scrap current rotas and force staff to sign new contracts or face the sack.

But London fire authority chairman Brian Coleman asked: "What sort of union orders its firefighters to go on strike over bonfire night?"

.......

SURELY.... if the London firebrigade will be on strike on Nov 5th, the irresponsible and lunatic thing do do that night is for loads of Londoners to light fires all over the place?

So when they or network rail, or the tubes strike at Christmas time let's abandon out centuries old traditions and cancel Christmas eh ?

The FBU is one of the most inexplicably militant of our public sector unions. They strike or go to dispute at the drop of a helmet and have done since the 1970's.

They are protecting lives and I thank them for doing their job ... but also looking to protect their overblown working conditions and amazing bonus driven pay-levels. This, in a nutshell, is a dispute to protect their age-old traditions of sleeping on the job and moonlighting.

Ooops ... Politics thread.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

(leaving aside the slight tongue-in-cheekness of my comment)

It is not now the tradition to have bonfires on Nov 5th in London - it is the tradition to have them on whatever day seems best to you (for many people it will be saturday 6th this year) - a week or so either side!

it is still traditional to have christmas day on a particular day - so the two are not entirely equivalent.

(also - how having a tube strike would affect me celebrating christmas or make it irresponsible to do so is a bit of a mystery...)

Get rid of the tossers.. There's a 2 year 'waiting list' to be become a firefighter.. Plenty of others will step into their shoes.

2 of my mates are firefighters. both of them earn excellent wages, both of them sleep (practically) for a living

I know right swiss they are!! The destructive power seems somewhat to be lacking nowadays, I mean they bang and fizz but don't acutally destroy like the old cannon or 321 bangers.
I have to lock my dog in every night because of idiots who start letting bangers off just after tea and carry on till crazy hours, and that's three weeks before Nov 5th and a fortnight after. I'm all for kids having fun around the 5th, but there are limits.
It's a bit of fun, hardly anyone's fault for wanting to enjoy themselves. People who have dogs know that they want locking up when it's bonfire season, same as everyone else knows that when you're walking down a path you keep an eye out for dog shit. Give and take.

Bloody love fireworks

Muppets who hold a "bonfire party" but don't actually have a bonfire due to concearns about our good old pal H & feckin' S, then have the cheek let the fireworksoff 45min late after most people with small kids had started to go home because it was getting late!!! and no feckin' refund from the £10 + charged entrance fees just to get ripped off by the chav fairground tea leafs!
Organizers of such cockups will lined up on the wall and shot!!! (or given the option of a place in the labour party).

While I'm on one why has the Scottish thief not resigned from being an MP when he crumbled as leader of the ragbags? Folk are queing up dump soil on Thatcher, me I hope Brown has every mishap and calamity there is thrown at him while he breathes!!

Still, it's about time that another bunch of duffers had a chance to screw the nation up biblically. Heaven knows, New Labour had a good old kick of the ball.
