LK will know better than me, but I would steam it over some lemongrass, corriander, chilli and coconut milk and lime or sommat like that.Gary the Enfield wrote:LK I was in Tesco last night and picked up a fillet of Vietnamese River Cobbler. I was told it cooks like cod so was going to poach it in milk with a little seasoning.
Any thoughts?

Ohh jesus. Is that what they're calling it these days?
Seriously, its nothing like cod. They sell it because the mark up is much higher. We should be fighting these things. Chinese "Alaskan" Salmon(you have to see that one to believe how bad it is), Vietnamese Pangasius....
It cooks really dry, and has a slightly earthy taste.
I'd bin it meself. Sorry.
You can poach it in milk if you want though. Its probably best cooked with a strong citrus/vinegar based sauce I'd say.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Righto, I'll grill it, serve it with chips and tomato ketchup, then.Lord Kangana wrote:Ohh jesus. Is that what they're calling it these days?

I know it had a bad reputation but I was under the impression that it had improved recently.Lord Kangana wrote:Ohh jesus. Is that what they're calling it these days?

Can't say I'd buy it myself but I know a bloke who has bought it a few times and says it was tasty, and he knows his stuff!

what "stuff" do you need to know in order to say whether you think summat is tasty or not?

I'll let you know. Hopefully poaching it in milk will keep it moist or I may bake it with some fresh pesto......

Dip the bastard in batter and deep fry it. Serve with chips, half a loaf of Warbies and lashings of salt and vinegar. Swill down with a can of vimto.
Done.

Bloody hell Bruce it was a throw away comment. All I meant was he does enjoy good food as opposed to eating any old shite!Bruce Rioja wrote:Ah right, so me thinking it had the taste and the texture of vulcanised rubber is actually all to do with me not knowing my stuff? But I was just trying to be helpful and positive seeing as it has already been purchased. I know a few years back it was to be avoided like the plague but sure recently I heard that it had improved and like I say fella I know swears by it.
Didn't mean to upset anyone.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
Our cat - actually my youngest daughter's cat - slipped away peacefully two weeks ago exactly one hour before we were due to take her to the vet's for the final needle...thebish wrote:ahh - yes - sorry GtheE - I even commiserated with you at the time.. (doh!)Gary the Enfield wrote:

We thought it was a last gift from her - we didn't have to take her life, she just took her own time... I had to call my daughter at uni and tell her... she cried... of course she did...

De nada.
The fish, by the way, wasn't all that. I've had worse but will probably avoid in the future.
Now then, Tesco are selling Mirror Carp. What the bloody hell do I do with THAT!

Heres something to cheer up the cat lovers;

Carp is Polish and/or Jewish (I can't remember which..). They keep the scales for luck, they bring wealth apparently.

They do like a bit of carp in Poland.Lord Kangana wrote:Heres something to cheer up the cat lovers;

In fact, carp, and not turkey, is the centrepiece of a Polish Christmas dinner.
My girlfriend, who finally made it back to Poznan today, tells me this is partly to do with that Catholic thing of not eating meat on certain days, and partly to do with the fact that carp was historically a 'royal' fish in Poland, as only the king was allowed to breed it in his ponds, apart from the few people to whom he granted a special licence.
So yes, somewhere on that bizarre journey, carp became a bit of a delicacy.
