[All] Today I'm fuming over Bernie the Boss' suggestion that in order to spice up F1 motor racing and to provide increased 'entertainment' he will consider dousing tracks with water should Mother Nature not give it away free of charge. Has he lost the plot? Surely it's dangerous enough in the dry, and more so on the occasions real rain does fall, without putting lawn sprinklers around a track? I've never heard such a silly proposition in all my life.

He doesn't have to drive on them, just keep taking the money. More bullshxt in this sport than football, and that's saying a lot.

Whether people agree with it or not, I imagine its something this government will do their best to stop!

Free prescriptions are a tricky one. I mean we all get em subsidised anyways. Cos the actual cost of medicine is a damn sight more than the £7.40 a prescription costs.

And I agree that some folk end up having to pay for meds every month and others don't.

But take ilnesses like epilepsy where someone is generally ok and fit for work but to lead that normal everyday life and contribute their taxes etc they need to take regular medicines for life. Should they get it free? On the one hand they could be earning loads and easily be able to pay their fees, on the other they might be a far greater burden on society should they not get the medicine.

Tricky one to sort out I suppose.

the SNP has an interesting - if quite difficult to evaluate - argument, suggesting that the money spent on free prescriptions os more than made up for in reduced NHS costs due to people who are put off going to the doctor - or curtail their treatment because of high prescription charges - and then go on to develop much more critical conditions that require very expensive medical intervention...

the scots have free eye-tests too - and I suspect this argument is easier to demonstrate for eye-tests (which often highlight other severe medical conditions)...

It is undoubtedly true but quantifying the actual real amounts is I imagine very difficult to do.

Its like with NHS direct, that was launched because they thought it would divert folk away from their doctors. What it actually did was have an entirely new class of folk ring up and a percentage of those ended up going to their doctors. So traffic was increased all round, by a service that it was thought would reduce flow through GP surgeries!

Its the same sorts of arguments that go with spending on preventative medicine, such as TV ads and educational campaigns, it costs a lot but what does it save? Proponents will argue it saves a lot detractors will argue the other way and ultimately its impossible to measure!
