Meadows: The club had no money and after five consecutive defeats and pending relegation (which happened) he decided he'd had enough.

The first player manager was really John Somerville who performed the role in the latter part of his playing career from 1898-1901, though he stayed on as manager until 1910. However, they used the term secretary not manager until Somerville retired as a player, then the term manager was used. So he was our first 'manager' but was player-secretary prior to that which meant the same thing.

Funnily enough, the wifes cousin once got into a long chat with Colin Todd when he was manager and he gave him some pretty forthright views on one or two of the players, describing Robbie Elliott as his biggest disappointment. This was shortly after a game at Sunderland where he seemed to retreat into a shell under the anti magpie abuse he was getting
