I always thought George Mulhall worked wonders keeping us up in his only season, as financially we were knackered. To be honest though as a fan since Armfield, I've always seen something positive in all of them. Some more than others, cough, Megson.

What was the story with Meadows & McIlroy? How come neither of em lasted very long?

Meadows: The club had no money and after five consecutive defeats and pending relegation (which happened) he decided he'd had enough.

McIlroy: Must have had some serious differences of opinion behind the scenes as he lasted only two and a half weeks then walked . My post is but a brief resume. You can read the whole thing in more detail in the club's history, here:

re McGovern.

The first player manager was really John Somerville who performed the role in the latter part of his playing career from 1898-1901, though he stayed on as manager until 1910. However, they used the term secretary not manager until Somerville retired as a player, then the term manager was used. So he was our first 'manager' but was player-secretary prior to that which meant the same thing.

i use to live on machester road and worked as a postman delivering mail to burnden park, one day while delivering to the ground i saw phil neal, I told him i was not impressed with what he was doing at the club, he said to me come in. He sat me down and talked for about 30mins about every player giving a frank assesment of them and everything else i asked him, i said to him not being funny but i will be here long after your gone phil and only wanted the best for my team. he didnt really like the comment but i came out of the office with a lot more respect than i went in with, and will always remember and appreciate his honesty and the time he spent with me, I never rated him as a manager but as a person he was top class.well im still here and he is long gone supporters are for life managers come and go.

You wouldn't get that nowadays. Which is, probably, for the best. Imagine Coyle saying "Aye, Alonso couldn't tackle a fish supper and he's a right pisscan, but you live and learn."

Funnily enough, the wifes cousin once got into a long chat with Colin Todd when he was manager and he gave him some pretty forthright views on one or two of the players, describing Robbie Elliott as his biggest disappointment. This was shortly after a game at Sunderland where he seemed to retreat into a shell under the anti magpie abuse he was getting

I could tell you so much about McGovern. There isn't a manager in the history of our club that's wanted it to work quite so much - to the point of him putting his own money in.

Give us a shout when you're free for a snifter. JM paid Whatmore's wages. I'll fess it all up when I see you next!

Redfearn said he'd rather go on the dole. Don't forget that - he was a c*nt!
