I regard myself as a peaceful man and would rather use negotiation than violence to sort out problems. There are many reasons for social unrest which are best tackled at source and can vary from community to community be it better policing, improved living conditions, jobs, social benefits etc.

Having said that looters are scumbags and need to be shown a very heavy hand if necessary.

A reasoned post... We are in for several days of non-reason, i fear... The sufferers will be the ordinary people of these areas... There are several candidates for the scumbag description in Britain... I include the looters...

Long talk with my middle daughter just now, who lives in Bethnal Green. She's been watching from her third floor flat window as looters carrying bin bag after bin bag walked down her street... Including one guy who, in a Porsche, came back for a second loot... filling the car to the brim...

She called the cops who said: We're aware of this but we're dealing with matters of life and death and can't do anything for you...

That would only work as long as we didn't over-burden them by expecting them to pay for all the damage caused. We should probably pick up that tab ourselves. What do you reckon?
