That's what I like about Akbars.. Beer is cheaper than most pubs in Town!

When you say it's flavour not heat....
I like curry, but curry does not like me. I tend to go Rogan Josh, very reasonable heat wise, and if done well, very tasty. I want something proper, no korma bullshit, but equally anything you'd describe as 'spicy' will leave me red faced and sweating blood. Flavourful but mild, form somewhere decent, suggestions?

I quite like Lamb or Prawn Saag Gosht for the exact same reasons you stated Pru

Indeed - we're the same. Basic law re heat is that if it hurts on the way in it'll hurt triple on the way out, so why bother.Prufrock wrote:When you say it's flavour not heat....

My favourite dishes are always the ones that involve spinach, by the way.
If you're around Manny then I really can't recommend East z East enough.

Try a Lamb Dhansak.
Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
Cheers, gents.

Bruce, am studying in Manchester at the moment, what kind of place is it, swanky or 'normal'. Might take the girlf next time she's up this way.

Deffo one to take the g/f to, Pru. Very contemporary and chilled out. There are two in Manny, we go to the Riverside one.Prufrock wrote:Cheers, gents.

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
tonight I made my first pie - recipe from my Hairy Bikers Pie Book (which I got for christmas along with a Hairy Bikers Square Pie Dish!)
it was a chicken* and mushroom pie with short pastry base and puff-pastry top...
It was (though I say it myself) a total and awesome triumph!! and utterly delicioustastic! (even clean plates from the kids..)
(* in my case - quorn chicken-style pieces)

Awesome effort, thebish. Hope it tastes as good as it looks.
On the subject of quorn, I tried their sausages some years ago and thought that they were bloody (pun intended) awful.
Is the rest of it better?

Love that you put "PIE" on it .... just in case.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

aye... middle son sat at table and asked... "what is it!" (sarky bugger that he is!)bobo the clown wrote:Love that you put "PIE" on it .... just in case.
Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
I generally find that quorn is fine if it is in a sauce of some kind - then it kind of adopts the flavours around it and adds texture..Bruce Rioja wrote:Awesome effort, thebish. Hope it tastes as good as it looks.

so - quorn mince (not the horrid TSP - soya mince - yuk!) - tastes fine in a bolognese or a chile
but on its own - it tastes like old cardboard... (like in the sausages...)

That looks excellent.
Love a good pie with a puff pastry top. Can't be bettered in winter...
Is it a good recipe book? Can't abide the hairy bikers but a pie recipe book sounds ace....

Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
I popped in Morrisons on the way home as I was tea less
Spotted some smoked fish, basa, never heard of it but I wanted smoked and it was cheap so it was chosen
Pre-prepared mediterrenean veg selection from the same place and launched it all in the oven...30 minutes later, sat down and can't speak highly enough of basa
Turns out its also known as 'river cobbler' which I had heard of
Excellent - recommended

it's an excellent non-nonsense book on how to make all kinds of pies (also - how to make the best chips to go with your pie...) I'd certainly recommend it!
Re: What are you eating and drinking tonight?
How to make generic chips for pies, or do different pies have different chips, like lovely, greasy wine?

Aye twice fried chips....thebish wrote:Prufrock wrote:How to make generic chips for pies, or do different pies have different chips, like lovely, greasy wine?generic! (and it's nowt new - they just recommend double frying - first in less-hot-than-normal-oil - then, later, in the very hot oil - to give the fluffy cooked inside and the crispy outside...)
I think thrice fried is even better.....think I've seen Gordon Ramsay do that...
Wonder how many times Heston fries his chips?
