Erm, aren't Bombardier Canadian? And as I recall they got a fairly hefty contract shortly after this one fell through.

I think they used this as an excuse to get out of ever more expensive Britain

yeah - but it's a multinational isn't it - and they have a British "arm" (at least I think they do!)Gary the Enfield wrote:thebish wrote:we gave a big contract for rail carriages to johnny foreigner a wile back - then watched our own carriage maker - Bombardier disappear up the swannee and lay people off...Montreal Wanderer wrote:"What does this mean, Zulus?" questioned the naive Canadian.Zulus Thousand of em wrote: Sibbald added: "This is the equivalent of 'Bombadier' for the UK print industry."

I think the contract that Bombardier didn't get went to Siemens in Germany, if I remember correctly.

Well yes but Siemens are multinational are they not? They also have a British 'arm'. So why are they Johnny Foreigners and Bombardier aren't?

Correct GtE. The tender for the railway carriages for Britain was won by Seimans. So are to be built by the Germans in Germany, rather than by Canadians in Britain.Gary the Enfield wrote:Well yes but Siemens are multinational are they not? They also have a British 'arm'. It would have been illegal under EU rules for the Govt. to interfere .... though that didn't suit anyone to take into account.
Facts, facts, facts again. They don't have bugger up a good whinge at times.

They have a very large facility near me (King's Heath, Northampton) which services the London Midland Desiro fleet. I don't think they assemble any trains here though.

Still, I feel sure that there must be a number of UK-based security printers that could have handled the Olympics tickets contract.

You didn't answer my question. Irrespective of whether Siemens can make these carriages in Britain and ignoring the fact that shortly after losing the tender Bombardier landed the biggest contract in their history (which they would likely not have done had they been succesful in the first place) What makes Siemens a Johnny Foreigner firm and Bombardier not?

All of which inconveniently brings us back to the nagging question of why everyone else has their own manufacturers and we don't?
