Re: Jaffka's gossip thread on the ins and outs at the 'Bok
I don't think being dropped by the manager = unlucky. Anelka was a proven player at this level for the money, Elmander was a gamble that failed. 1-in-5 for a club record signing can in no way be considered a success. We'll just have to write it down to experience now.BWFC_Insane wrote:Not sure about that. Elmander was 27 when he signed here, about the same age as when Anelka was when he signed.H. Pedersen wrote:Yes this line of argument is pretty silly. We offered contracts to Elmander and Knight; they didn't want to sign them. According to Gartside, the Sampions Lig Basterds doubled Elmander’s salary. What can Coyle do about that?
The blame lies squarely with Megson and Gartside for signing players in their late 20’s for grossly inflated fees, and only tying them down for 3 years.
Elmander just was unlucky in his first season with stop start injuries, and then he just never got any real form. He showed the odd sign when Coyle first came in but never really ignited.
It's kind of one of those things. I do think we should have offered him what he wanted to stay and it still would have been miles cheaper than what weve done now, but of course it's easy to say that but who knows what ramifications that would have had when discussing deals with other existing players?
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Which is all good n well until you remember that N'gog is our 5th record signing...Lord Kangana wrote:I don't think being dropped by the manager = unlucky. Yep but as I said his first season he scored in the opening game, looked bright then got injured the game after and was out for several weeks and it was stop start. Clearly a confidence player and he never really got going till his third season here when he showed why he was our record signing and ended top scorer.Lord Kangana wrote:I don't think being dropped by the manager = unlucky. Certainly much less of a disaster than the 7m quid spent on Ngog and Sordell if you take a snapshot of it at this moment in time.

At less than half the amount.
So, with your wizzo bang figures, I'm sure you'll agree that a 1-in-10 return would equal Elmander's £/goals ratio, non?

So to use your words. Can't be considered a success and should be put down to experience.Lord Kangana wrote:At less than half the amount.

The problem is that you appear to be using Anelka as the benchmark for an 8 mill signing. Which it Isn't. At the time if I recall correctly we were also linked with Andy Johnson @ 10.5. Mill who's managed 13 in 86 for Fulham.

He didn't get going until he had to. When he was playing for a contract he upped his game. The rest of the time he was mediocre.
Big Sam came out with the same about Henrik Pedersen that when he was playing for his contract he was scoring a lot more than when he wasn't which meant that come the start of negotiations that it would not have that much significant impact the fact he was going through a purple patch in form.
Anelka was different, he was always playing for his next contract which meant he did great things for us.

Nothing that has been reported suggests that Sordell and Ngog combined cost half the amount Elmander did.Lord Kangana wrote:At less than half the amount.

If we are judging them as a pair lets see if we go back up if they can score 12 premiership goals between them in a season....

Well they're off to a flyer on 3 in one season so far. It's all looking bright. All they need to do now is fire us back to the Premiership, so they can have another go.thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:Nothing that has been reported suggests that Sordell and Ngog combined cost half the amount Elmander did.Lord Kangana wrote:At less than half the amount.

Did Gary Cahill score more than times than N'gog and Sordell ? And David Wheater got 2 so he probably wasn't far off

Actually adjusted for the 7M Sordell-N'Gog/8.2m Elmander figures, it means the former pair have to find 12.75* goals between them in the next 2 seasons to represent the stunning value of Elmander.thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:Nothing that has been reported suggests that Sordell and Ngog combined cost half the amount Elmander did.Lord Kangana wrote:At less than half the amount.

*Figure rounded up in favour of Elmander and to the detriment of Sordell-N'Gog.

That would be the next two Premiership seasons (obviously)Lord Kangana wrote:Actually adjusted for the 7M Sordell-N'Gog/8.2m Elmander figures, it means the former pair have to find 12.75* goals between them in the next 2 seasons to represent the stunning value of Elmander.thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:Nothing that has been reported suggests that Sordell and Ngog combined cost half the amount Elmander did.Lord Kangana wrote:At less than half the amount.
