Er me too. Don't remember the sloping pitch, Zat Knight or the goat though..Gary the Enfield wrote:TKIZ! wrote:I know the Thornleigh one as I'm an old boy. Also one of the smallest pitches I ever saw. Mind you, Yorkshire league pitches are all like that. On most of them they slope so much the sheep shit rolls off of its own accord.Bruce Rioja wrote:Did anyone ever have the misfortune of playing on that one at the back of Queen's Drive in Bromley Cross before they leveled it? I played on it once as a kid. I swear, if you stood at the bottom corner flag the one diagonally opposite was a good 30 feet higher. Not only that but it had a massive banking down one side towards Eagley Brook and because of the shape of the pitch the ball would naturally gravitate in this direction. The rule was whoever it came off had to go and mug it!

Given my age it has to be some fair years back. I played for Brownlow Fold back then and it was a friendly. It was one of those that you looked at and said "kinell". Very narrow and, as stated, with a wing to wing slope. Absolutely no doubt it was there. Probably alterations took place later but I remember that one.Bruce Rioja wrote:
Where was this sloping pitch then? Whenever I played at Thornleigh those pitches across the road were very decent - the one at the top on the bend was excellent.

Now Grundy Hill, the Horwich RMI ground. THAT was a side to side slope.
I played there maybe 20 times & never got used to it ... & square posts too !!

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Given that this is the thread that goes "off piste" - when we signed our new keeper my eldest lad said he sounds like a 60's pop star. "Lonnie Donegan?" says I. " Is Lonnie his first name?" says he. "No, it's Andy" says I. "Pity" says he. Since then I just can't say Andy Lonergan without stumbling over my words.

Zat Knight is very hit and miss and to be fair to him he's had some really solid games for us, but he's so damn inconsistent it costs us too much. He doesn't make major gaffes like Gerald Cid, it's just small lapses of concentration like not marking someone properly or being slightly out of position that costs us. Whether that will have as much of an effect in the Championship only time will tell, but I don't think he'll get caught out quite as much. In my opinion I'm quite happy to see him sign a new deal but only as a back up to Ream, Mills and Wheater. I think those four are strong enough for a promotion push.

No - he fouled the other guy and hand balled it as well so gave two free kicks away at the same time - and it was in the penalty area so.......
