Let us know what you find.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

The Thames Barrier was constructed as a direct consequence of the storm surge of 1953 in order to save lives and property. It was never intended to close as often as it does because sea-level rise was not anticipated in its initial planning.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:That seems extreme - is London now 20 more likely to flood than it was in the 80s?Lord Kangana wrote:mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:Are incidents of flooding on the rise?
I'd have thought the barrier is there because the capital is built on the flood plain of a large river.
In the 1980s there were four closures, 35 closures in the 1990s, and 75 closures in the first decade of this century
A more interesting number to me would be how many times the Thames has seriously burst its banks (or would have done without the barriers) over the last 300 years.

Begs the question then why are we not moving sensitive and economic departments out of London to higher ground? that seems to be the sensible thing to do, history proves you cannot hold back the tide forever.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:The Thames Barrier was constructed as a direct consequence of the storm surge of 1953 in order to save lives and property. The Deltawerken in Holland also came about as a direct consequence of the 1953 flood and they weren't completed until 1998.Bruce Rioja wrote:I'm sure it only came about in the 80'sLost Leopard Spot wrote: The Thames Barrier was constructed as a direct consequence of the storm surge of 1953 in order to save lives and property. That's no excuse. It might be that the engineers who built the Thames Barrier were Dutch in that case.

Don't be stupid we move them into the empty property left behind, then wait!Because the higher grounds are covered in sheep pastures and they are earmarked for housing to accomodate the waves of Bulgarians and Romanians we're expecting

Of course it isn't. The closures are demanded by the global cabal of Poles, Bulgarians, Jews and do-gooders to fool the supine population into believing that global warming is an imminent threat and that we should all take to houseboats. You can't prove it of course because all freedom of information requests on the subject are denied, just like you'll never prove it's the same cabal that covertly runs the International Federation of Houseboat Builders and all its members.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:That seems extreme - is London now 20 more likely to flood than it was in the 80s?In the 1980s there were four closures, 35 closures in the 1990s, and 75 closures in the first decade of this century

how can history prove that you can't do something forever?? surely history can only prove what you could or couldn't do in the past?Hoboh wrote:history proves you cannot hold back the tide forever.

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
Because if time travel had been invented they'd have been about looking in the past and we'd have known about it because, well because that's history. That and the fact that history would have told us that 60 million people were there for the only time that England won the World Cup as every time traveller and his missus turned up and tried to fit into Wembley in 1966. (but then thinking about it, that might explain the White Horse final

I suspect you're getting the general idea of "time travel" mixed up with the more specific backwards time travel. History cannot prove that forwards time travel isn't possible...
also - it is possible that we would not know about it if people traveled backwards in time - because they might be arriving in a parallel universe - and we are living in the "original" one that existed before (or after) they started dicking about with the timeline... it is possible that the Lost Leopard Spot in several parallel universes has encountered these backwards time travelers - and it's only the original timeline Lost Leopard Spot (you!) who hasn't...
Also, you will see that I have removed your welsh extra "l" from "travellers" to make the English word "travelers"

Re: Today I'm angry about.....
My gast is flabbered. Travellers is not Welsh, travellers is, how my dictionary puts it, chiefly British. It's acceptable, it's not Americainish. Travelers is some modern fandango version that is ugly to the ear. Plus the full nuance of disdain is not possible if an angry person spits out "they're from the Traveler community", the extra l is needed to fully load the word with venom.thebish wrote:Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Because if time travel had been invented they'd have been about looking in the past and we'd have known about it because, well because that's history. As for your argument viz time travel, that's just silly. If there was more than just one Lost Leopard Spot I'd know about it. And the llaws* of physics states (explicitly with no humming or ahing about it) that the conservation of summat requires that if something can go forwards it can equaly* go backwards.
