There's also something deeply satisfying about driving past someone's bonfire and getting a right good waft of it. That's not just me, is it?

At Christmas time in parts of Spain they traditionally burn wood (fir, pine?).I first experienced it in Torrevieja and the smells are utterly delightful.

There's nothing quite as satisfying though, as watching the ash abd smoke traverse towards the neighbours freshly hung out washing.

Serious question, Bijou Bob. Does that mean the confirmation is conditional on the perceived quality of your essay or is it perhaps some strange method of finding whether you are really interested in the allocated 'slot'?

Anyway, congratulations and good luck.
Cheers for that. The place does depend on the perceived quality of my essay, which will hopefully be finished for 9pm tonight. Got a long afternoon of prep work to do!

"sniping" on ebay is using a little piece of software (or website) that bids for you at the last second - saving you the bother of having to watch and try to refresh pages to see rival bids. basically - nobody knows you are going to bid until it is too late. it also means you can bid on stuff that is ending at 3am and not have to wait up!

It is also completely pointless as you can achieve exactly the same effect by bidding up to your absolute maximum at the start of proceedings, then go away and come back to see the result after it's all over.

not exactly..

if you bid up to your maximum - then other ebayers are aware that another person is in the game.
if you use a snipe tool - they have no idea.

And presumably you could save money.

With these here sniping tools, can you set a maximum price? Presumably you can otherwise a sellers friend could late on bid thousands on an item just to catch any automated snipers?

If say your maximum was not required to win the auction?

Or are the tools not clever enough to up the current bid by a small amount? Do you actually have to specify a maximum bid at the outset? In which case, yeah, they do seem a bit pointless!

You set a maximum when you enter your snipe. As I say, you can do that just by entering a maximum bid anyway.

And not only that but if by a mahoosive coincidence your max and the snipe max were the same, you'd win by pre-emption. 8)

I suppose then the only advantage is your maximum goes in at the last possible minute, meaning there is no time for a non-sniper to outbid it.
