There were white European races the English were not too fond of - indeed, it was said the wogs begin at Calais. My uncle, wounded at Anzio, would not let Italians (my sister's boy friend actually) in his house although the chap would have been a baby in the war. He had no problems with Germans or Japanese. The Nazis were racist when it came to Slavs - good white Christians though they were. It was never just a matter of skin colour. Racism has always been complex and insidious as thebish says.

Certainly I would not think of it as racist since it has been a saying for decades - probably since the movie King Kong - usually from a women to a man. However, I suppose all these monkey chants in football aimed at negroid players has changed the perspective.
