Men do not ogle each other in changing rooms. They barely speak, certainly not to people they don't know. No eye contact is made. Where speak is spoke it is on overtly neutral subjects .... or sport.
Maybe in "certain types" of gymnasia, but not yer average one.
Drying and dressing is a solo act, albeit in a collective space.
No-one casts an eye on another persons body parts other than in the faintest passing, where unavoidable.

I will not be cowed on this (did you see that Bruce. Cowed).
Racism used to be quite straightforward. Now it is getting ridiculous to a point beyond absurdism.
Why can a mention of religion be racist, or a mention of traditional foods?
If for example I protest that female genital mutilation makes me aghast, why is that not racist? Behave.
Bloody queers will be wanting to get married next...

Just a mild parody of the 'political correctness gone mad' stance... fuelled, in part, by amusement at Cameron being responsible for the gay marriage bill...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Sorry?William the White wrote:Political correctness gone mad, if you ask me... person hole covers... baa baa nice sheep...Lost Leopard Spot wrote:I think the bloke who said it can only see it through a veil of litigation. when racism was based on race, the colour of your skin. Don't be obtuse. If you were an anti-Semite it was hardly an argument about how kosher your food was. It was how big your nose was. if you hated blacks you called them niggers not fried chicken eaters. If you were anti immigrants flooding Blackburn you went Paki bashing, not on an EDL march.thebish wrote:when and how?Lost Leopard Spot wrote: Racism used to be quite straightforward.
If you want to say something, say it. If you don't it's best to shut your mouth. But comments about fried chicken are neither here nor there. Despite WtW sarcastic comments - almost like he's a different colour to me, the salad dodger!

That, despite the twist you put on it by quoting what I said without the end bit, was obviously not dire cted at you. You asked, I answered. It was when I was a youth obviuos when a comment was racist. It should still be now.
If you can hide a racist comment then I suggest it's just an insult. Are insults illegal? Maybe they are, I'm old fashioned.

who did you tell to shut his/her mouth? (I think you are wrong - I think racism has always been complex and insidious. You say yourself it was simply colour of skin and in the next sentence say it was about nose-size.)Lost Leopard Spot wrote:That, despite the twist you put on it by quoting what I said without the end bit, was obviously not dire cted at you. Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
There were white European races the English were not too fond of - indeed, it was said the wogs begin at Calais. My uncle, wounded at Anzio, would not let Italians (my sister's boy friend actually) in his house although the chap would have been a baby in the war. He had no problems with Germans or Japanese. The Nazis were racist when it came to Slavs - good white Christians though they were. It was never just a matter of skin colour. Racism has always been complex and insidious as thebish says.thebish wrote:

I also meant physical appearance. I know I actually wrote "colour of skin" which is not exactly the same as "physical appearance" but I was using it as shorthand for that very concept.

Re: Today I'm neither Angry nor Happy about....
I am confused and saddened by an incident which occurred yesterday at a local Australian Rules game in Sydney. This was not a small local park game but a fully fledged "Premiership" competition.
A young lass of 13 years of age apparently yelled out to a player something along the lines of "you big ape". The remark was addressed to a player named Adam Goodes who happens to be an aborigine. Goodes immediately called on security personnel and pointed out the lass. She was escorted out of the stadium. Obviously Goodes felt that her comment was racist. Commentators and the press immediately castigated the young lady citing poor parenting, "what's the world coming to" and other apoplectic outpourings.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but to call someone a big ape has absolutely nothing to with race, colour or creed. It has always, and still does, mean that the person described is clumsy, careless or, perhaps, a bit of an oaf. I feel sorry for the lass. Goodes came out with some statement after the game stating that we should all feel sorry for her because of her upbringing, social surroundings and peers.
Where does this bastardisation of our language, idiomatic or otherwise, stop?

Certainly I would not think of it as racist since it has been a saying for decades - probably since the movie King Kong - usually from a women to a man. However, I suppose all these monkey chants in football aimed at negroid players has changed the perspective. I did note there is a night club in Perth, Western Australia called the Big Ape (https://www.facebook.com/BigApeAu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) - you better start a petition to close it down.Dujon wrote:I am confused and saddened by an incident which occurred yesterday at a local Australian Rules game in Sydney. Is it OK to tell Goodes that he is a pathetic, mardy-arsed c*nt?Dujon wrote:I am confused and saddened by an incident which occurred yesterday at a local Australian Rules game in Sydney. This was not a small local park game but a fully fledged "Premiership" competition.

Not certain, but just think it is.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Significant improvement now that aborigines are recognised as human beings, instead of simply target practice... See page 169, and indeed, the whole article...Dujon wrote:Do get your quotations right, bobo!

Perhaps calling someone an 'ape' (a sub-human species) has greater resonance for some rather than others...
Please note - the article does not single out simply Australian actions against indigenous peoples...
