You see, its not all adversarial this political lark.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Re: The Politics Thread
I am enjoying the irony of a socialist lecturing an economic right winger on the naivety of thinking that someone could do something for any reason other than the profit motive.

Well. In shocking news today, Theresa May is still a know-nowt mental harpy bitch. And still in charge of shit!

Re: The Politics Thread
What the shit-f*ck is this privatise Royal Mail lark? The govt are constantly banging on about how everything is losing money (although getting rid of Trident would be short-termist, and not really put a dent in the grand scheme of things) but now they want to sell off something that is actually making money. It's either a cynical political ploy (shit, turns out state-owned stuff can make money, get rid of Lloyds too, while we'll get a low price for it), or they're just thick.
That's assuming it's making an actual profit, and not making a fake 'profit', as its costs are actually heavily subsidised. If that is the case, then they're obviously correct to take the oh-so-successful route they did with the trains. Let's keep paying the subsidy, but let someone else 'privatise' the profit.
One of the arguments given for the privatisation on the news was that RM needed infrastructure spending which would require borrowing, and the Govt doesn't want to borrow more, whereas a private company can borrow money happily. Now, call me naive, but the only way a private company is going to borrow that money is if spending it looks like it will increase profits in the future, and so pay for itself and more. If that's the case, then yay for the Govt borrowing the same cash at a cheaper rate and making a profit too. If it isn't going to make a profit, then we have three options 1) No company takes it on 2) They do, fail, and then we bail them out 3) (and this my fav, imagine this happening at any point, at all, in history, or even recently) We pay for all the shit stuff, and they get the money for the nice stuff.
Royal Mail used to be shit, but now it's fab. E-Mail almost killed the postal service; Internet shopping saved it. The reason RM is so good is because DHL or the like will offer to deliver your parcel, for 6 times the price, at a time when you aren't in, and then will kindly allow you to have it delivered to you at a depot in the arse-end of nowhere, which takes so long to get to and back you'd have been better buying it in the shop. This depot is also conveniently open only in office hours, when you're at work.
The Royal Mail now, if you're lucky, delivers it early enough that you're still in. If you're not, they leave it in a depot within easy reach, which is open before work.
The Royal Mail, if privatised, definitely wont up its prices to almost those of its current rivals, sell off all the prime real estate in town and city centres, and therefore provide a much shitter service. The bonus is the profit it is currently making will go to its shareholders rather than the Treasury. AND, if it f*cks up we'll end up paying for it anyway.
woo.

I deapair when I buy something online that isn't delivered by Royal Mail. Cos you have feck all chance of receiving it without driving to fecking Preston or Clitheroe or somesuch far flung depot and usually taking a day off work to do so.
The Royal Mail service is excellent.
And yeah lets privatise something that works cos that always makes things miles better doesn't it?
Idiots.
Re: The Politics Thread
I really can't see the logic behind privatising the royal mail. I can see the increased prices and poorer service coming already. I buy a lot of stuff online though so I might buy some shares in it.

Re: The Politics Thread
Yep. Correct. One of the reasons that Royal Mail makes a profit is the philately market, once privatised it's anybody's guess whever that can be sustained or not.Prufrock wrote:What the shit-f*ck is this privatise Royal Mail lark? Lets try a different tack. Name one private parcel delivery service who is as affordable as the Royal Mail and lets me pick up my parcel from a local depot (a mile or less) from my house whenever I want Monday-Saturday.Hoboh wrote:So BT or the GPO as was gave a good cheap affordable or on time service did they? I haven't looked at the Royal Mail thing in any detail, but don't really understand it either.
How long has it been profitable for? It was losing money for quite a while, wasn't it?
I wonder what superficial short-term boost the proceeds of a sale would give the public finances?

The government also relieved it of the not inconsiderable profit it would have generated by the sale of 3G and the proceeds of BT etc etc. if only they'd left it as the GPO.William the White wrote:The government relieved it of the burden of its pension fund, thus taking away all of its debt.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:I haven't looked at the Royal Mail thing in any detail, but don't really understand it either.
