Re: a team of mis-spelled/mispronunciated bolton players...
I think it was either the Swindon game or maybe even the Liverpool Cup Final but that tosser Brian Moore constantly referred to John McGinlay as 'mumble' McKinlay, obviously never having heard of anything further north than Craven Cottage.
Afternoon Elton, afternoon Saint, afternoon viewers.
Arsehole.
No calls for the easily confused Blake brothers? They may have both turned out for Blackburn but even I could tell the difference betwwen Nathan and his older, balder, whiter brother.
Something the press never could. Still, all former Blackburn players look the same to me.
Going back to the Liverpool Cup Final the programme notes state that Mark Seagraves was known by the nickname of 'Mark Seagrave' - footballers eh? Zany! (It also said Gudni was born in Bolton - check that).
Myself I always referred to Gudni as 'Gundi' and Bruno as 'G'Notty' after hearing someone else do it. But I was being ironic! After one guy near us exploded in an Arkwrightian P-P-P-P-Pat-A-Line-an! outburst one match everyone near us used to say give it to 'P-p-p-p....'
Eeeh, we did some laughing in those days. Terrace humour!
Mixu was often called 'Miku' wasn't he?
I remember a classic David Higson too. I think it may have been against Wrexham where he constantly called one of their players 'Pugger', about twenty minutes in you hear some whispering and then 'I'm being told it's actually pronounced 'Pugh' but I'm going to carry on calling him 'Pugger' because that's what it looks like to me!'
On a final personal note I have a mate called Murray Blair. He once got a letter addressed to 'Mr Furry Bear'.
I get 'Colin' and 'Paul' a lot.

I'm not asking you to 'think outside the box' I just wish you'd have a rummage around in it once in a while.

Not a Bolton player but Neil Warnock was sometimes called Colin W**ker.

Ehiogu was the Vikla sub ... when he was bought on the tannoy man read out his name and I swear 25,000 people laughed out loud.[/quote]
Aye, I remember that. That was funny.
I also remember the announcer reading out a birthday wish to a girl that brought the house down. Her name was Rachel Onion.
I bet she pronounced it 'O-Nigh-on'

Re: a team of mis-spelled/mispronunciated bolton players...
I can't remember who it was but there was an interview with somene who used to get their name said in a variety of ways. The presenter asked him how it should be said but he replied that it didn't matter, what was important was what he didn on the pitch and not what people called him. He was obviously used to it and good for him.
What really gets my goat is when Clive 'Raining Goals' Tyldsley starts saying players names in the accent of the country their from. He does it with teams too adopting a geordie accent to say 'Noo'cass'l' or a Manwell-esque 'Bar-thel-ona'.
It's like Mind Your Language never happened.

In the English language there is only one sound for these two Serbo-Croatian sounds (ch as in cherry). The č sound is harder than its English counterpart while the ć sound is softer. Harder means that your tongue has to be stiffer and it has to press against the palate with a limited surface. Softer means that your tongue has to be sloppier and press against the palate with a wider surface.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Ta.

On an end of season DVD there was a tribute to Dave Higson which was full of stories about him. Apparently he was the announcer for that game and when Ugo Ehiogu was brought out he apparently said, 'and on comes Eggi, Eho, Egu... I can't pronounce your name son but good luck anyway.'bobo the clown wrote:Pooh.CrazyHorse wrote:Isn't a Vikla sub a world war 2 u-boat?
I keep using the bloody phone prior to the lenses going in.
Nonetheless the crowd reaction that day was both very funny and incredibly rude.
I wasn't there so I can't verify it, but i think it was good old David Lee who told the story.

Phil brown did the telling. Little known fact, I was at that reserve game and I have the programme (well, folded sheet of A4) to prove it. It sits proudly next to my 2001 play off final video.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

He did the same against Torquay, kept calling Darren Pugh Darren Poof (or something like that)coffeymagic wrote:I think it was either the Swindon game or maybe even the Liverpool Cup Final but that tosser Brian Moore constantly referred to John McGinlay as 'mumble' McKinlay, obviously never having heard of anything further north than Craven Cottage.
