Bloody well hope so...
MATT Mills and Tyrone Mears look like being the next two big names allowed to leave the Reebok.
Dougie Freedman is determined to do more business but may have to wait and see if Leeds United and Millwall firm up their interest in the two defenders before the transfer window shuts on September 2.

I'm far from convinced that letting Mears go is a good thing to do.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
That BN report isn't really saying owt new. Even the "sources close to the player" are basically saying "Phew, Leeds didn't sign Greer".
Bruce, letting Mears go must show desperation at our wage bill, or confidence in Hayden White as back-up... as noted, DF gave Mears a fair crack last season and Tyrone seemed to be getting better all the time, but you sense things have turned for him: fans baiting him, manager playing him at right-wing then pimping him out...
Like I say, I think we're past the days of two senior professionals for each position – but it's interesting that we might end up with only two recognised full-backs (both brand new).

Word on the street is that Dougie is after a defender who can play right across the back lineBruce Rioja wrote:I'm far from convinced that letting Mears go is a good thing to do.

If that fails that he has a full back in his sights.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
If we could shift Ream Mills and Mears for Dawson and a cheapo one who could cover both full back spots we'd be laughing. Not sure it's doable though.

I'd be worried Bout shipping Mears. Personally. I'd start him at RB with Baptiste in the middle.

So many times there was gaping space in the right flank in the first 2 games, just begging for a full back to get into. But he seems hesitant to get forward. For me, he's (baptiste) a centre back playing at full back. It doesn't really work, unless you have exceptional wingers. It's killing our width. That's been evident in the first 2 games.

Its true that. He's used to playing at full back with excellent wingers in front of him though. The one thing that would make me hesitate moving him is that he does seem to have stemmed the flow of crosses from that side. Which was a huge problem last season when Ricketts and Mears played there.boltonboris wrote:So many times there was gaping space in the right flank in the first 2 games, just begging for a full back to get into. On a related note, how pissed off with Lee must Tierney be by now? Not only has Lee left him exposed in the two games several times with two players to mark. But also Tierney has on many occassions bust a gut to make the overlap, does so very well, then Lee does his usual thing of fart arseing around with the ball coming back inside then giving it away. Needs work does that.

Indeed, positively encouraged too I'd say. Tierney showed on Saturday that he's certainly no slouch when it comes to putting a cross in. His ball in for Pratley's goal was one of the best that I've seen in a long while.

50% of the praise goes to Pratters for busting a gut to get in the box

Same here! Wasn't that impressed with him last year ( think he needs the Eagles treatment) also he is playing on the left which I ain't sure he's comfortable with( cuts in cus he's right footed)

He cuts in on the bloody right as well. Said last season he was being carried.plymouth wanderer wrote:PC1978 wrote:If by work you mean dropping Lee then I agree!BWFC_Insane wrote:Its true that. Even more so this season.
First half against Reading, when we had the ball he offered some decent movement, and the odd nice touch. But he's not doing anywhere near enough and hasn't for the majority of last season either, IMO.
What I will say is that the system we look to be trying to play this season with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 or whatever you call it, will suit him more than the 4-4-2 we played a lot last season. For me he's never been a winger in the traditional sense and never will be. He's not going to take the full back on much and bang crosses in. He needs to move across the front line and the system allows him to do that more. But I'd like to see more from him in general. He's a long long way short of offering what Eagles does to the team.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
So he's not a get-to-the-byline winger but he annoys you when he cuts in? Bit confused there, BWFCi. However, I will say again that DF has options.
Interesting to hear Boris's thoughts on Baptiste etc. Would be surprised if DF changes his back four by that much, although I would be surprised and saddened if he doesn't soon see that the Knight-Wheater combo is a mistake generator. (And I was surprised he was so adamant that Bap is "just" a right-back.)

I think the problem with our centre halves is that neither Wheater, Knight or Mills have much pace or a Stubbs or Dawson like reading of the game. I would be happy to play any of them three alongside a centre half with pace or greater anticipation but not with each other.throwawayboltonian wrote:Been saying that myself. We're caught between a rock and a hard place with our current centre halves, but if we stick with Knight and Wheater I think we'll ship a lot of goals and dangerous set pieces.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:So he's not a get-to-the-byline winger but he annoys you when he cuts in? I meant off the ball he's effective when he makes runs across the defence.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:So he's not a get-to-the-byline winger but he annoys you when he cuts in? Bit confused there, BWFCi. However, I will say again that DF has options.

I don't mind him cutting inside either. It is perfectly fine. But then he has to find a cutting pass or drive in and shoot (which he does very rarely) or actually give the ball to the overlapping full back.
All too often he cuts inside and goes backwards or loses it.
Part of it is that his movement is effective but he needs players who can work with that. However, what he needs to sort out is his work on the ball. It needs to carry much more threat, one way or another.

Re: The "Nothing to see here"Transfer thread
He can't sign more until we release someone. And until he knows who he can get rid of he can't prioritise which position needs filling. We have 4 centre halves, who may all be shite, but as we've been trying to get rid of 2 of them, until one goes, I would suggest we can't bring another in.throwawayboltonian wrote:Yeah, I agree. They're all too similar which highlights each others problems, causing my anxiety! I really hope Dougie signs a centre half who can have a Dawson like effect, but he really doesn't seem set on signing one. Well, apart from his comments about Dawson's availability last week. Just don't want us panic buying last minute.PC1978 wrote:I think the problem with our centre halves is that neither Wheater, Knight or Mills have much pace or a Stubbs or Dawson like reading of the game.
