Of course with a general comment like mine you could find an example of him being involved in some sort of build up, but my broader point is that he's Darren Bent-esque. It will mean he has way fewer touches than an average Championship striker, is unable to win a header, and will spend half the time moaning about not getting free kicks.Worthy4England wrote:Yes indeed. And a very good through ball it was too!CAPSLOCK wrote:Didn't his flick out to Lee create the first?Athers wrote:Was in the middle of criticising Beckford for his lack of will to get involved when he scored
Just glad he's scoring because if he doesn't, it's not only that but he hurts the chances of anyone else scoring. All's well that finishes well though.
Had it been N'gog, folks had have been telling us that justified picking him until Christmas.
Like I said though, these are mostly forgiven if he scores 25 in 46. As a general point though personally I always prefer to share goals round the team than have a one man goal-machine.

I'd be delighted with a "3 year ago" Darren Bent. I wouldn't necessarily want to stop anyone else having a pop and scoring a few too!Athers wrote:Of course with a general comment like mine you could find an example of him being involved in some sort of build up, but my broader point is that he's Darren Bent-esque. I don't understand what you have against Ream. You constantly have a go at him and it's not just comments saying "he's not good enough" or whatever, there's always an accusation of him being weak, a coward or something like that. It seems personal, for whatever reason.boltonboris wrote:Apart from when he cost us another goal by being a bit of a pansy and get arsed off the ball akin to a 6 year old.
Made up for that with the pass, but it's still startling that he gets 'done' by such poor opposition so often.
Ream's 'mistake' wasn't that bad, anyway. He was initially in a good position but when the pass was struck, it went past a Millwall player who tried to stop it but it had too much pace on it for him, so that caused the pass to go onto their striker very quickly. Ream had no time to adjust his body position and he lost his man. That's not a big deal, certainly nothing like you'd think reading some comments on here. It wasn't good defending but these things can happen. I think Ream probably expecting the first Millwall player to stop the ball but because he missed it, Ream was wrong footed. It was a minor but costly mistake and, unfortunately, these things happen. I'd be more worried about defenders missing tackles or being in the wrong place altogether than these minor things which are very hard to prevent.

Re: No Jackett required?
It was bad enough to lead to a goal, which on another day, could've seen us lose 2 points.
I've nothing against him as a person. I don't know him.
He looks like he cares, but he's being made out to be some kind of superhero by the "I told you so bunch".
I just don't rate him as a centre back and that goal, epitomised him as a defender in my opinion.
I just think he needs to toughen up and get a bit dirty

Re: No Jackett required?
I can't disagree with what you're saying. It seemed at the ground like a defensive mistake and certainly looks that way on the replay. Its just his overall play that has improved. He doesn't panic, keeps hold of the ball and seems to read the game better. That said I can't recall him playing against a bruising centre forward so far, he might get a torrid time.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:
What did you make of Ream's part in their goal?
My take on Ream at centreback is that in more games than not he will have a weak moment that gives the opposition a clear goal-scoring opportunity. That's what happened yesterday, isn't it?
I'm not saying that we have a better option at the moment, incidentally.
Well I'm glad that Athers is on the same page as me. It doesn't matter if he scores 20 goals this season if as a team we only score 50. It should be about the collective rather than the goal machine. Good finish but then he misses an open goal. For a "clinical" striker he misses an awful lot of sitters. It might be he's on a bad run infront of goal. But his overall play isn't up to scratch imv. And I really don't like his attitude, he thinks he some world class superstar who hasn't done well above League 1.Athers wrote:

There's only so many times you can explain that a minor, not bad, mistake that leads directly to a goal is only a minor, not bad, mistake and still believe it.
Unless of course it happens to fit with a wider point of view you're trying to convey.
Ream has been steadily improving over his 1 year 9 months with us, to the point that he's nearly passable as a Championship player of some description. He did alright earlier in the season when he started in Midfield (can't recall who it was against now...might have been Leeds at home).
To suggest that Saturday's fcuk up (which detracted from an otherwise good display from Ream) was anything other than a schoolboy level error, isn't correct in my opinion. Had Knight done the same, he'd have been lambasted.

Re: No Jackett required?
I've seen Beckford quite a few times this season and have been far from impressed, but on Saturday he looked like a proper striker. You can see he has gained in confidence and his finish was great. Couldn't believe the miss, but it happens to the best of them. He was also involved in Hall's goal and was making runs all over the place and I bet Shittu and co didn't find him an easy opponent. He's never going to be a great all-round footballer but there were hints that he brings more to the team than just finishing. Whether he'll keep doing either thing remains to be seen.
