Absolutely right there Will. In the days when our average attendance was around the 4,000 mark. Eusebio's presence at Hoppy's testimonial helped boost the attendance to about 18,000. I watched in awe from the Great Lever End.

When I was a kid in the 70's I used to get a footy mag called SHOOT!. In it there was a feature called 'Focus' which was an player profile thingy. The question 'Toughest ever opponent?' was often answered 'Eusebio'. I remember having to ask a teacher who the guy was, and him going to extraordinary lengths to tell me all about him and what a mercurial talent he was. Born a little too late to ever garner a true appeciation of him myself, but from what I've seen and read the world has lost not only an excellent former footballer, but a gentleman also. RIP.

He was a tall chap (I think his nickname was the Gentle Giant or somesuch). However, he looked taller because he was in a shortish team. I suspect Crouch may have a few inches on him. I think he along with the other strikers (including Eusebio) played for Benefica so they knew each other well. He didn't score against us - it was Bobby Charlton's brace against Eusebio's penalty. This match was moved to London (originally scheduled for Goodison) so I had to watch on tv.
