On this morose tack then ... Leader of the Pack.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

They played Cathy's Clown during half time at the Bok today. No mention why, they just played it.bobo the clown wrote:Phil Everley, aged 74.
Cathy's Clown no more.
A bit too early for me to have been a fan at the time but the Everley Brother's music is, in the very real sense of the word, classic.
RIP Phil.
Another legend gone.

Cheers, Phil. I used to enjoy your music back then. If nothing else I could understand the lyrics.

Eusebio. 41 goals in 64 appearances for Portugal. One of the greats.
Not quite up there with Veloso, but sad to see him go. RIP.

733 goals in 745 appearances. What a slacker.
RIP

Absolutely right there Will. In the days when our average attendance was around the 4,000 mark. Eusebio's presence at Hoppy's testimonial helped boost the attendance to about 18,000. I watched in awe from the Great Lever End.William the White wrote:IIRC he played once at Burnden Park. At Eddie hopkinson's testimonial.

From the footage I have seen of him he was up there with the best, in the same breath as Maradona, Di Stefano and Pele.
The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.

When England beat Portugal in the 66 World Cup Eusabio was full of praise for Bob Charlton. This was after he'd banged in four goals to pull back North Korea's three goal lead and win. Cracking player and a pretty humble sort of guy. A real gent. R.I.P.

I was at the North Korea game and two of his four goals were penalties IIRC. If not for Pele he would have been considered the best player in the world. A supreme talent. Do you remember his team mate Monty? Torres was the Portuguese Peter Crouch, about six feet thirteen tall (or so it seemed back then)Montreal Wanderer wrote:I was at the North Korea game and two of his four goals were penalties IIRC. Re: This weeks RIP's........
When I was a kid in the 70's I used to get a footy mag called SHOOT!. In it there was a feature called 'Focus' which was an player profile thingy. The question 'Toughest ever opponent?' was often answered 'Eusebio'. I remember having to ask a teacher who the guy was, and him going to extraordinary lengths to tell me all about him and what a mercurial talent he was. Born a little too late to ever garner a true appeciation of him myself, but from what I've seen and read the world has lost not only an excellent former footballer, but a gentleman also. RIP.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Re: This weeks RIP's........
He was a tall chap (I think his nickname was the Gentle Giant or somesuch). However, he looked taller because he was in a shortish team. I suspect Crouch may have a few inches on him. I think he along with the other strikers (including Eusebio) played for Benefica so they knew each other well. He didn't score against us - it was Bobby Charlton's brace against Eusebio's penalty. This match was moved to London (originally scheduled for Goodison) so I had to watch on tv.TANGODANCER wrote:Do you remember his team mate Monty? He already was Palestinian. He was born there in 1928, some twenty years before the state of Israel's existence. It is sometimes forgotten that not all Jews were either German or American. Indeed it is sometimes forgotten that back in the nineteen twenties more Palestinians of Jewish heritage were born than Palestinians of non-Jewish heritage. And it is often deliberately obscured by revisionist historians.Little Green Man wrote:Ariel Sharon RIP (Reincarnation Into Palestinian)

This isn't the politics thread, but what were the birth rates before, lets pluck an arbitrary figure out of thin air, say 1920 and the British Mandate of Palestine, and its avowed aim to create a homeland for the Jews?
