"The biggest difference between panko and standard breadcrumbs is that panko is made from bread without crusts, says Pam Becker, media representative for Progresso, which makes both types."

So still fecking breadcrumbs then!? :whack:

Japanese
Pan = bread (this came up previously on this forum in the Joke thread relating to what pandas eat. What do pandas eat? Bread. its a perfectly good joke in Japanese).
ko = small things, bits, parts.

panko = bits of bread.

It's just Japanese. I'm sure when they see us talking about shaved fish some Japanese person is going "shaved fish" wanko offo, it's just katsuobushi!

In the same way Mercedes and BMW are cars, then yes they are breadcrumbs. But you be wrong in assuming they're exactly the same.

Again, as above, no it isn't.

So what is it then? What magic makes it not a sauce?

I also question panko. Crumbs made from bread are bread crumbs.

A terrapin is not a tortoise but it is a turtle.
Terrapin soup is not however turtle soup. And neither terrapin soup nor turtle soup are mock turtle soup, but a soup made from tortoises can be.

Indeed they are. Just in the same way a Mercedes and a BMW are both cars. As I said above. Buy some panko crumbs, then make some breadcrumbs at home. You'll see the difference. But you have to do that, it isn't a philosophical but a physical difference.

And the word jus goes back to Nouvelle Cuisine days. It was used to differentiate between adulterated and unadulterated product (yes, sauce) so a classic jus is a simple reduction of veal stock, as opposed to demi-glace which will contain a roux and other additions.

I'm not really sure what a jus is.
Presumably some kind of foreign muck gravy, no?

As above crazy, a jus is an upmarket gravy made without the classically English additions of chemicals and stuff that probably doesn't belong in food.

Came across this food blog over the weekend. Includes plenty of cracking looking recipes. Most of them are based on cooking for one person, though it wouldn't take a genius to scale them up. I think that i'll be doing the one with pork cheeks, chorizo and potatoes. Am I going to have to visit the butchers to get some pork cheeks? Tried the smaller Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi in Rammy without success.

There's even a section on coffee for all of you aficionados, with a link to a coffee drinkers forum. I didn't realise that such things existed. Enjoy!
