meanwhile - on facebook - people are actually praying for a dog, cruelly disfigured in a house fire!!

not everyone is taken in, though...

In a cruel twist of fate, I have also suffered severe burns this evening #PrayForMartyn

^ Cruel bastards. I mean, I can see it's a piece of ham draped over the dog's head, but if you look closely you can see the owners have had the dog pierced and it's wearing a ring through it's lip!!!

Why is it that when speaking about the number of cows, aboard a ship for example, we say 'head of cattle'. 450 head of cattle were aboard, but I've no idea about their bodies or if a corresponding 1,800 leg of cattle made the journey!

And on a similar dystopian note, there is a photograph in the Times on Monday, page 32, showing what can only be described as a black man whiting up. Performers celebrate the Cape Town Minstrels is the accompanying title to the picture. Reverse the colours and that appearing anywhere in Britain or America and AllHellWouldBeLetLoose.thebish wrote:a bunch of white men with a guns is something to be calmly considered and debated... it seems... in America....

See, the same puzzles me when applied to humans but only ever in restaurant/catering situations. "And it only came to £25 a head". That'll be £25 each then, won't it?Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Why is it that when speaking about the number of cows, aboard a ship for example, we say 'head of cattle'. 450 head of cattle were aboard, but I've no idea about their bodies or if a corresponding 1,800 leg of cattle made the journey!

similary - "100 rounds of ammunition" when you might think it easier to say "100 bullets"

And from the restaurant side of the equation that 'head' is a 'cover'.Bruce Rioja wrote:See, the same puzzles me when applied to humans but only ever in restaurant/catering situations. Bloody air raid siren just sounded in Stretford! Just a test I guess, but it shook me for a few seconds.

Examples of a 'synechdoche' where a part of something is used figuratively to represent the whole e.g. 'take her hand in marriage' when presumably you get the rest of the bride as well.clapton is god wrote:And from the restaurant side of the equation that 'head' is a 'cover'.Bruce Rioja wrote:See, the same puzzles me when applied to humans but only ever in restaurant/catering situations. Aside: I wasn't aware of the word until I watched the film 'Synechdoche, New York. Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's a weird one, but worth a go if you're into that sort of thing.
